About the Author
Rudrangshu Mukherjee is vice chancellor and professor of history at Ashoka University. Earlier, he taught at Calcutta University; he has held visiting appointments at Princeton University, Manchester University and the University of California, Santa Cruz. He was the editor of the editorial pages of the Telegraph, Calcutta, and continues in that role as a consultant. He is the author and editor of several books which include Awadh in Revolt, 1857-1858: A Study of Popular Resistance, and Spectre of Violence: The 1857 Kanpur Massacres, as well as The Penguin Gandhi Reader.

Superb Treatment of the Symmetries and Asymmetries of the Lives of Two Great Freedom Fighters

Mukherjee has done a wonderful job in covering the arc of both Nehru and Bose's political lives and their personal friendship, with all its highs and lows. The symmetries are remarkable - their love of India, their insistence upon home rule and Independence, their frustration at the Rightists in Congress, their flirtation with socialism, and their erudition and intelligence. Their differences, too, are made very clear in the book- Nehru's ameliorative relationship with Gandhi versus Bose's fiery relationship, Nehru's desire to compromise versus Bose's unrelenting points of view, Nehru's hatred of Fascism versus Bose's respect for the militarism and order brought about by fascism, and so on.

Though the final trajectories of these two men diverged considerably- Bose died early while Nehru- Gandhi's chosen one-- went on to the Prime Minister of free India, the two men had and amazing kinship. Ultimately, the Mahatma anointed one and disenfranchised the other.

Mukherjee's book is lucidly written and treats both protagonists with enormous humanity and empathy. Indispensable reading for those interesting in India's Independence movement.

The book reads like a drama.

The book leaves a mild pain. The book brings out the fact that Bose was a misguided intellect in a matter of fact manner. The language of the book is very lucid. The book leaves the impression that both Nehru and Bose had several sore spots in their personality. Not great persons indeed.

This concise introduction to convex analysis and its extensions aims at first year graduate students, and includes many guided exercises. The corrected Second Edition adds a chapter emphasizing concrete models. New topics include monotone operator theory, Rademacher's theorem, proximal normal geometry, Chebyshev sets, and amenability. The final material on "partial smoothness" won a 2005 SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize.

Jonathan M. Borwein, FRSC is Canada Research Chair in Collaborative Technology at Dalhousie University. A Fellow of the AAAS and a foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Science, he received his Doctorate from Oxford in 1974 as a Rhodes Scholar and has worked at Waterloo, Carnegie Mellon and Simon Fraser Universities. Recognition for his extensive publications in optimization, analysis and computational mathematics includes the 1993 Chauvenet prize.

Adrian S. Lewis is a Professor in the School of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering at Cornell. Following his 1987 Doctorate from Cambridge, he has worked at Waterloo and Simon Fraser Universities. He received the 1995 Aisenstadt Prize, from the University of Montreal, and the 2003 Lagrange Prize for Continuous Optimization, from SIAM and the Mathematical Programming Society.

This is an excellent introductory text with a more mathematical edge. It is much better than the typical computation-based books, but is not as rigorous as some of the more technical books. It does fit a small niche, but it is neither computationally nor mathematically advanced, which is a bit disappointing.

World-renowned for her iconic black-and-white street photographs, New York City’s visual poet laureate Helen Levitt also possessed a little-known archive of color work, which was been collected for the first time in Slide Show, her third powerHouse Books monograph.

In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color on the streets of New York, where she had photographed two decades earlier in black-and-white. But tragically, the best of these pioneering color pictures were stolen from her apartment in 1970 and she had to start over again. In 1974 the new work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New York’s Museum of Modern Art—an early example of a slide show presentation by a museum and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world.

Slide Show presents more than one hundred photographs—including eight surviving images from the 1959–60 series—more than half of which have never been exhibited or published before. This impressive monograph is a worthy successor to her magnum opus, Crosstown (powerHouse, 2001), which included the largest collection of her color pictures to date, and to her more intimate volume of black-and-white work, Here and There (powerHouse, 2004), which presented more than eighty “unknown” Levitts taken over six decades.

Starred Review. Often squalid and always unsentimental, but full of wonder and sly humor, photographer Levitt's New York City is both familiar and startling, never more so than in these color photos from the early 1970s. (The book also includes a handful of prints from 1959–1960.) Without the arty distancing effect of black-and-white (for which she is primarily known), Levitt's trademark wit has more hard-edged immediacy. Levitt's city on a summer afternoon, the time of day when most of these photos were taken, is as full of oddities as the ocean floor. In one striking shot, a tiny girl crouches awkwardly by the curb like a little crab, her delicate knees and elbows askew. Levitt seems to regard the human body as a fascinating bit of found sculpture. She captures a man's belly sagging in counterpoint to a crumpled car fender, a beggar's folds of fat hanging down like the fabric of his rag bags and the brutal contrast between an old, bent-over couple and the gleaming hoods of a pair of sport cars. Old age and poverty are on extensive display, but the effect is never grim. Levitt—who still lives and works in New York—never lets the pathetic and dirty overshadow the pure pleasure of seeing without flinching. (Feb.)

Levitt’s photographs appeared in Edward Steichen’s landmark 1955 show The Family of Man and in more recent exhibitions of great importance, including MoMA’s Photography Until Now and the National Gallery of Art’s On the Art of Fixing a Shadow in Washington, D.C., both celebrating the invention of photography. She has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Levitt’s reputation as New York City’s master street photographer was further cemented in 2001 when her photographs were featured in the opening sequence of Ken Burns’ acclaimed PBS documentary series, New York. The author of the critically acclaimed, best-selling monographs Crosstown, Here and There, and Slide Show (powerHouse Books, 2001, 2004, and 2005), Levitt lived and worked in New York City, naturally.

John Szarkowski is director emeritus of the Department of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, New York and was the director of the department from 1962 to 1991, in which time he oversaw more than one hundred exhibitions and the inauguration of MoMA’s photography collection galleries, and edited and contributed writing to various publications. His exhibitions include New Documents, Mirrors and Windows, Photography until Now, and retrospectives of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Diane Arbus, and Eug�ne Atget. Szarkowski is the recipient of the International Center of Photography Infinity Awards for Writing and for Lifetime Achievement, the Royal Photographic Society Progress Medal, and the National Arts Club Gold Medal for Photography, to name a few. He has taught at Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, and Yale. Szarkowski returned to picture making in 1991, and has exhibited his work at Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York and the Cleveland Museum of Art. He lives in New York.

Disappointing Printing

I'm a big fan of Helen Levitt's work & I would love to give this book a 5 star review. Unfortunately her excellent photography is not presented well due to a poor print job. It seems that something went wrong in the scanning or pre press phase. All the photos are too light & the colours are washed out. This is not how Kodachrome should look. Some of the same images are printed in the German book titled 'Helen Levitt' & the difference is significant. The photos in the German book are much more accurate. Unfortunately this publication is no longer in print & hard to come by.

I already knew that this book 'Slide Show' had poor reproductions as I had a chance to view a copy in the library. I bought it anyway because it is the only way to see some of her photos. I can't think what went wrong as Powerhouse seems to be a quality publisher & I own other photography books by them where the printing is fine.

Early Color

What a remarkable treasure to have this book of Helen Levitt's color work. Pre-dating Eggleston this is inventive and wonderful to look at. While she is mostly known for her black and white photographs, this opens a new level of appreciation for her contributions to photography. Beautifully printed, this is highly recommended for fans of color photography.

The least glamorous photos of New York you are ever likely to see

The photos in this collection portray working people and poor people, people who are poorly dressed, people without air conditioning on hot summer days, people with ugly pets. The collection is oddly timeless; many photographs of New York can be dated to within a few years by looking at store awnings and, clothing styles, and haircuts, but not these. The people whom Levitt photographed are wearing clothing that was shapeless, ugly, and impossible to date in 1960, 1970, or 1980. With the exception of a couple of photos that show movie theater marquees in the background, nothing here can be dated.

The photos are all the more remarkable because they flatter nobody. Did people give permission to be photographed, knowing how they would look? Had they given up long ago?

Some of the photos give their subjects dignity, but not all. The book is sometimes cruel, sometimes funny.

As an aside, I'd love to know where these photos were taken. Some look like East Harlem, but not a single photo shows a street sign, and I can't identify any of the stores.

About the Author
MARC J. ACKERMAN, PhD, Chair of the Forensic Psychology Program at the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology, is a forensic and clinical psychologist and expert on personal injury and child custody. He maintains a counseling and consulting practice in Milwaukee and is the author of several books for psychologists and lawyers on the topic of child custody, including Wiley's Clinician's Guide to Child Custody Evaluations, Third Edition and "Does Wednesday Mean Mom's House or Dad's?": Parenting Together While Living Apart, Second Edition. He has been involved in thousands of personal injury and custody evaluation cases and is the cocreator of ASPECT, a major child-custody evaluation instrument.

Mediocre

The book was just okay as a very basic overview, but I was disappointed. A very superificial overview of each topic that was presented, much was redundant from other texts. For example, how many times can one read about using the MMPI-2 in forensic assessments. Furthermore, the cover said that the book covered newer malingering instruments, such as the MPS. However, the coverage of the MPS was about 7 lines and pretty useless.

Superficial and mediocre

This book has a superficial review of issues in forensic psychology. Perhaps useful for a student in an initial review of the subject, it lacks any depth for the practitioner who is generalizing skills into specific areas in the forensic domain. I am sure there are more useful and valuable books for the practitioner.

Some surprising problems

Although the intent of the book is on target and it could have been a very successful volume, there are some surprisingly unprofessional editing errors and oversights that render the book's usefulness suspect at best. Examples include references in the text that aren't in the bibliography, mis-numbered and missing Rapid Reference tables, missing portions of text (for example, the section on the PAI abruptly and inexplicably jumps to a passage about the Rorschach and other projective tests on p. 50 of my copy), and missing or incorrect entries in the index. Furthermore, the editor's own instrument, the ASPECT, gets more page space than other more commonly used instruments despite having mixed empirical validity. Finally, there are no chapters on court-ordered diagnostic assessments or capacity assessments, two very common kinds of forensic assessments.
