168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think, by Laura Vanderkam

It's an unquestioned truth of modern life: we are starved for time. We tell ourselves we'd like to read more, get to the gym regularly, try new hobbies, and accomplish all kinds of goals. But then we give up because there just aren't enough hours to do it all. Or if we don't make excuses, we make sacrifices- taking time out from other things in order to fit it all in. There has to be a better way...and Laura Vanderkam has found one. After interviewing dozens of successful, happy people, she realized that they allocate their time differently than most of us. Instead of letting the daily grind crowd out the important stuff, they start by making sure there's time for the important stuff. When plans go wrong and they run out of time, only their lesser priorities suffer. Vanderkam shows that with a little examination and prioritizing, you'll find it is possible to sleep eight hours a night, exercise five days a week, take piano lessons, and write a novel without giving up quality time for work, family, and other things that really matter.

From Publishers Weekly
Vanderkam (Grindhopping) offers a new system of time management: if readers want to make more time to spend with their children, get fit, or write that novel, they must slash nonessential time wasters and minimize tasks that are not core competencies, a business term for what a company does best and must prioritize. She offers solid and even excellent career advice, about both how to make the most of time at a current job and how to manage time to get ahead. And there is something curiously fascinating about her bizarrely brutal approach to time management (There's little point... in spending much time on activities in which you can't excel). But given that the author seems to be targeting a very rarefied echelon of upper-middle-class working moms (like herself), the book might have very limited appeal. More alienating, though, is her insistence on pummeling the life out of life. Vanderkam's vision may yield plenty of time to pursue worthy activities, but it's a life leached of color or spontaneity. Don't Waste Any Of Your 168 Hours On This Book
By Karen Hall
I usually try to be fair and tactful in any review, but the only honest thing I can say about this book was it was a horrible waste of time.

For starters, the suggestions the author makes really only apply to people who are (a) professionals in corporate environments who have subordinates and flexible schedules, or people who are self-employed, either way making probably at least $100,000 a year; and (b) people who are married with children. I guess the author assumes if those criteria don't apply to you, you must not be busy enough to worry about.

She certainly shouldn't have needed an entire book to state her suggestions, which can be summed up simply: for every thing you don't want to do in your life, either get someone else to do it, or just ignore it.

The 'getting someone else to do it' involves delegating (at work, to subordinates; at home, to other family members) or hiring someone to do it for you. To be fair, delegating at work is a great idea if there are reasonably people you can delegate to; I knew that wouldn't apply to me, but there's not much I can change about my job, and I got the book more for suggestions of how to create more free time in my home life.

That's the chapter that really bombed for me. If I followed this author's advice, I'd have a maid, a cook, a lawn & garden service, and a laundry service - all on my legal secretary's salary. She blithely talks about the $2,500 a year one of these services costs, or recommends a personal shopping assistant like the one she used - at a cost of $400, all she had to do was "try on clothes and hand people my credit card."

Yeah, because all of us have that kind of cash to throw around. This author often made me feel like those of us making 'average' wages (less than $40,000 a year) are just peasants who, since we can't afford a single one of her suggestions, apparently don't deserve more leisure time. Maybe in her world, only the upper class citizenry deserve that luxury.

I think the dumbest thing I read in this book was this: she suggested that to save hours making dinner night after night, you should either go out to eat, or purchase pre-cooked, frozen meals to heat up (not TV dinners, heaven forbid, she's talking about using some type of catering service or expensive online service that ships you meals) ... and then she graciously says that if you can't afford that option, you might consider taking a second job to pay for it.

Really? That gives me MORE time to myself? I stop cooking to save a few hours a week, and then have to take a second job to pay for this "time-saving suggestion"?

And she got paid to come up with these? Obviously I AM in the wrong line of work.

I realize no one book is perfect for everyone, but this author doesn't even appear to try to offer any useful suggestions to anyone who doesn't fit into her tiny category of people who could afford to do what she suggests. That's fine, but the book really ought to be re-titled so that the rest of us know there's nothing there of use to us. Something like "168 Hours: How To Buy Yourself Some Free Time On Over $100K A Year" might about do it.

I am an avid reader, and have read a LOT of books. Not all of them have been good, but I realize no author can please everyone, and I'm usually pretty forgiving. But I just couldn't do it for this author's elitist attitude and absolutely useless suggestions.

Don't waste your money or time on this book - if you're looking for inspiration, get a good book on 'simplifying your life' instead - real world suggestions that generally cost little to no money (in fact, often save money) and provide tangible results for anyone, regardless of status or income.

Book is short on Time Management and long on anecdotes
By J. Russell
The demographic this book seems to aim at are women who either (1) are evaluating staying in the work force full-time after having a child; and (2)those who already have children and continue to work full time. Most of the anecdotes revolve around succesful women that had children and continued to work full time. Apparently most men have no time management issues.
It seems that the author never missed an opportunity, no matter how slim, to imply that time constraints could not justify a woman working less than than full-time once they became a parent. Far better to work full time, spend "quality time" with the children doing the things only you can, and then pack them off daily to a quality daycare for all of those routine needs that anyone could perform just as well as you.

As far as most of her time management tips...watch less TV. The rest were most useful to those who (1) are self employed-thus having nobody to answer to; (2) have jobs that are task driven and can be done anytime (ie-writing); (3) have enough cash to hire someone else to do all of the things they do not want to (laundry, cleaning, cooking). If you see yourself here, BUY THIS BOOK!

I had enjoyed Ms Vanderkam's periodical pieces and had high hopes for this book, but would definitely not recommend it to somebody looking for Time Management tips. It took too much time to sift through all the fluff to find the few that were useful.

How to make the most of "the 168-hour mosaic of our lives"
By Robert Morris
There is no shortage of books on the subject of time management. In fact, the last time I checked, Amazon offers 11,229 of them but not one of them explains how to increase the number of hours within a seven-day period: it is 168, no more and no less. What sets this book apart from the dozens of other books on time management that I have read is the fact that Laura Vanderkam rigorously follows what Albert Einstein recommends: "Make everything as simple as possible...but no simpler." For example, in the first chapter, she suggests, "Picture a completely empty weekly calendar with its 168 hourly slots." She then helps her reader to document his or her (the reader's) current allocation of time. She achieves that objective as well as each of her other primary objectives such as disabusing her reader of major misconceptions about how much time (on average) people spend on sleep, work, and leisure time components. While doing so, she cites real-world examples (i.e. real people in real time) that both illustrate and confirm basic strategies that produce more and more enjoyable as well as better, and achieved sooner, in less time. She also identifies the core competencies that her reader must develop and then leverage to achieve that same objective. She is at her best when explaining how to determine what the "right job" is, what it requires, and how to obtain it.

[She cites Teresa Amabile's admonition, "You should do what you love, and you should love what you do." If that doesn't suggest what a "right job" is, I don't know what does.]

Vanderkam also explains how to control investment of time so that "there should be almost nothing during your work hours - whatever you choose those to be - that is not advancing you toward your goals for the career and life you want"; how to determine what the "next level" of personal and professional development looks like and how to "seize control" of the schedule while completing a transition to that level; and what a "breakthrough" is and how to achieve it to expedite the transition process. Vanderkam believes, and I fully agree, that our lives proceed through a series of levels above or below, better or worse than where we were previously; the journey to each should be one of personal discovery; and that it is important to know what we value most but we must realize that priorities change at various points in our lives as circumstances, relationships, obligations, and aspirations change. Each life is, quite literally, a "work in progress."

At the outset of this review, I noted that Amazon now offers almost 12,000 books on time management. Several of them are outstanding. In my opinion, 168 Hours is less about time management than it is about self-management (especially self-discipline) as well as decision-making (especially setting priorities). Laura Vanderkam provides about as much information and counsel as anyone needs to alleviate a real or perceived time crunch, leverage core competencies, define and then locate or create the "right jib," control rather than be controlled by a calendar, achieve breakthroughs to greater understanding higher-impact performance, and in all life domains (career, family, personal, community, and society) be happier and more productive.

I congratulate her on a brilliant achievement. Bravo!

In the Name of Gucci: A Memoir, by Patricia Gucci

The gripping family drama—and never-before-told love story—surrounding the rise and fall of the late Aldo Gucci, the man responsible for making the legendary fashion label the powerhouse it is today, as told by his daughter.

Patricia Gucci was born a secret: the lovechild whose birth could have spelled ruination for her father, Aldo Gucci. It was the early 1960s, the halcyon days for Gucci—the must-have brand of Hollywood and royalty—but also a time when having a child out of wedlock was illegal in Italy. Aldo couldn't afford a public scandal, nor could he resist his feelings for Patricia’s mother, Bruna, the paramour he met when she worked in the first Gucci store in Rome. To avoid controversy, he sent Bruna to London after she became pregnant, and then discretely whisked her back to Rome with her newborn hidden from the Italian authorities, the media, and the Gucci family.

In the Name of Gucci charts the untold love story of Patricia’s parents, relying on the author’s own memories, a collection of love letters and interviews with her mother, as well as an archive of previously unseen photos. She interweaves her parents' tempestuous narrative with that of her own relationship with her father—from an isolated little girl who lived in the shadows for the best part of a decade through her rise as Gucci's spokesperson and Aldo's youngest protg, to the moment when Aldo’s three sons were shunned after betraying him in a notorious coup and Patricia—once considered a guilty secret—was made his sole universal heir. It is an epic tale of love and loss, treason and loyalty, sweeping across Italy, England and America during the most tumultuous period of Gucci's sixty years as a family business.

Fascinating book, very readable, truth is always stranger than fiction
By Italophile Book Reviews
In the Name of Gucci is a heartfelt recounting of several lives and one iconic business through the lens of Patricia Gucci, the daughter of the family-firm Gucci's powerhouse behind the company's growth into an international luxury goods firm, Aldo Gucci.

Aldo Gucci's daughter by his second wife, Patricia is now a mature woman with a mature understanding of human nature, and is informed by her mother's strong memories. The author sets out to do three things: to honor her father, to honor her mother, and:

"to give my children a unique and truthful memento"

There are some omissions to spare feelings, and to avoid lawsuits, no doubt, and there is spin on things that could be viewed from a very different, unsympathetic perspective. If you set those things aside, the book is highly readable, often fascinating, fluidly written, and gives the reader a close-up view of people who filled the newspapers for decades. That many members of the Gucci clan would not be out of place in a recent book about psychopaths in boardrooms, makes the book compelling reading.

The spinning in the book generally relates to 53 year-old Aldo Gucci's sexual harassment of a 20 year-old employee. What makes the egotistical assault by the old-man-with-an-infatuation on the young woman most damning is that the young woman was very immature, and emotionally and psychologically weak and vulnerable. Hounded into a relationship with a married man old enough to be her grandfather, left the fragile woman scared for life. She is the author's long-suffering mother.

Other spinning in the book involves the disgusting wealth that went to the Gucci family from their luxury goods business, rather than to their employees or the tax authorities, to the former for their hard work and long hours and having to put up with the vicious abusive tantrums of the company's owners, and to the latter what was their due by law. The conspicuous consumption, of especially the 1980s, turned this reader's stomach.

If you are someone who prefers non-fiction reading to fiction reading, like me, you'll enjoy every word in the book. Truth is stranger than fiction, and the truth of the Gucci family is especially strange. I received a review-copy of this book. This is my honest review. Beautifully written, it speaks to men
By FreeRadical
A deeply personal account of the patriarch behind the brand history and the author's own childhood in the company's heyday in the 70s & 80s. Beautifully written, it speaks to men, women and children whose actions have gone unheard. The book restores one's faith in humanity on so many levels - tenderness, tolerance, generosity, magnanimity - by underscoring both the presence and the absence of such virtues in the characters that inhabit the house of Gucci.

Interesting life!
By cook
This is an interesting autobiography by Gucci's daughter Patricia. She's had quite a life. Her mother was a stunningly beautiful woman also. It was so well written, I didn't want to finish it.

Blood Therapy (Kismet Knight, Vampire Psychologist Series), by Lynda Hilburn

Colorado psychologist Kismet Knight and the dark world of vampires are back in this sexy, romantic sequel to the wicked romp, The Vampire Shrink.

Still reeling from the so-called vampire murders around Halloween, Kismet is trying to adjust to her new otherworldly patients and her unique relationship with drop-dead gorgeous nightwalker Devereux. She can’t deny her attraction to him, but is his intoxicating hold on her a loving embrace or vice-like grip? And while Devereux has been clear about what he’ll do to any immortal who lay a fang on her, Kismet is still being stalked by Lucifer, the obsessed bloodsucker targeting therapists for death. With Kismet scheduled to make a presentation at the American Psychological Association’s New York conference, handsome FBI agent Alan Stevens feels it’s too risky to let her go without him. Not only is he concerned that the conference is a psychologist smorgasbord too juicy for Lucifer to pass up, but there is also some unfinished personal business with Kismet to be settled.

Can Alan―or Devereux―track down the elusive Lucifer, or is Kismet destined to confront him herself?

Blood Therapy was therapy for me

I read Lynda Hilburn's first vampire book and the next thing I knew I was reading her second. She has to be a vampire herself because she kept me entranced all night instead of sleeping.

From Library Journal
Described as "a book of inspiration and practical exercises for fiction writers," this work examines all the aspects of writing, from getting started through setting, character, plot, structure, revision, and a final section entitled "And now what?" Novelist Hodgins identifies the range of options available at each stage; quoting other writers, many of whom are little known in this country, he makes this book a voyage of discovery. Grammar is not discussed, nor is motivation; Hodgins presumes both. He does not presume knowledge of the terminology of writing, though, and is careful to explain terms before discussing each concept. In each chapter, exercises and a reading list further illuminate the points discussed. Divided into discrete sections, this book can be used as a reference tool, but it should be read through once first. It's fair to say that while the text does lag at times, it never lags for long, and struggling novelists out there should find most of their conundrums addressed. Recommended. -Robert C. Moore, DuPont Merck Pharmaceutical Co. Information Svces., Wilmington, Del.

For Those Who Care About Writing Well
By Debra Purdy Kong
There are plenty of how-to writing books on the market, many of them focused on writing page-turning novels that will land a publisher and sell tons of copies. Certainly, they have their place in the market, but once in a while writers should get back to basics and read a book that is all about writing well. A Passion For Narrative is a great choice.

Jack Hodgins is not only a highly regarded Canadian author known for his Vancouver Island settings and wonderful storytelling, but he's been teaching writing for years. The man knows what he's talking about. His chapters on character, setting, and plot are excellent, with terrific examples to stress points.

Hodgins asks the reader to do the exercises offered at the end of each chapter, and supplies a recommended reading list emphasizing each chapter's topic. While these exercises will benefit new writers or offer advanced writers new ways to look at their work, there are so many exercises that I doubt readers will try half of them. I reviewed the original 1993 edition, which was revised in 2001. Even since 2001, I think most writers are more impatient than ever to be published, which is a shame. In the push to become savvy marketers with twenty self-published e-books to sell, the concept of writing well, just for the joy of it, has become lost in the shuffle.

One of the best
By Edie
This is a wonderfully detailed and accessible book that tackles that most under-examined aspect of the craft of writing: structure. That chapter alone is worth the price of the cover.

I recommend this book to all my writing students and have referred to it regularly over the years.

There were too many jumps and blotches between Jack Hodgins' wrtten words and the paraphrases. Very useful for the short story segment in OAC Writers Craft with Mr. Gorman. Many thanks for a much used book.

Sharper look, harder read
By Kyle
Compared to the previous edition, the 2nd ed feels more difficult to read, which is unfortunate for a condensed review type book. It LOOKS nicer than the 1st ed, but reads like a more dense reference type book. Probably better used if you have a lot of time prior to board exams or want to review something specific, rather than as a cram/review book a month or weeks before boards.

great review book
By Caerus Maximus
Clinical pathology can be a daunting area for many residents, especially in regards to board preparation. However, the information in the book is high yield and it is presented in a concise and straight to the point manner. The tables are very useful. A good review book is of great help to anyone who finds CP sometimes confusing and abstract.

a new 2nd edition available in 2008 from ASCP
By J. Mistle
I own the second edition of this book. It is greatly expanded, and has now become online (as all of the rest of the Compendium series from ASCP). The new edition, along with 2 other books, are being sold online from ASCP for around $300 as a 3 vol. set (member price).
The new 2nd edition is greatly expanded (I've seen the first edition from friends). The book and the surgical path compendium are all bullet points. Very few pix. The strengths of the book are
1. Short paragraphs and get to the point.
2. Not meant to learn the material in the first time. strictly review
3. Up to date (plus the online part, which is not activated by me yet, more review on that later; you get a series number at the front or back of the hard cover book, like the AFIP atlas series).
4. Sturdy; I don't like soft cover books too much.

Lows:
1. Getting too big for serious cramming sessions for the board. By the time you finish reading this, you may not have time for anything right before the boards. Perhaps this is all you need, since surg path tend to be most residents' strength.
2. Minor typos. Proof-reading is still important. I'm surprised that the errors are not caught.

Stakeholder Relationship Management: A Maturity Model for Organisational Implementation, by Lynda Bourne

In any activity an organisation undertakes, whether strategic, operational or tactical, the activity can only be successful with the input, commitment and support of its people - stakeholders. Gaining and maintaining the support and commitment of stakeholders requires a continuous process of engaging the right stakeholders at the right time and understanding and managing their expectations. Unfortunately, most organisations have difficulty implementing such culture change, and need assistance and guidance to implement a consistent process for identification and management of stakeholders and their changing expectations. As a continuous improvement process, stakeholder management requires understanding and support from everyone in the organisation from the CEO to the short-term contractor. This requires the concepts and practices of effective stakeholder management to become embedded in the culture of the organisation: 'how we do things around here', this book provides the 'road map' to help organisations achieve these objectives. The text has two specific purposes. Firstly, it is an 'how-to' book providing the fundamental processes and practices for improving stakeholder management in endeavours such as projects, and program management offices (PMO), it also gives guidance on organisational survival during mergers and acquisitions, preparing for the tender bidding, and marketing campaigns. Secondly, Lynda Bourne's book is for organisations that have recognised the importance of stakeholder engagement to their success, it is a guidebook for assessing their current maturity regarding implementation of stakeholder relationship management with a series of guidelines and milestones for achieving the preferred level of maturity.

Review
'Met all my needs and more. ...Recommended as a must read...despite having managed stakeholders for years but never stopped to really think of why they present unique problems and how to manage and prevent these issues becoming problems that could delay a project. If you don't read this book it's at your own peril.' F.A. Perry, reviewer on Amazon.co.uk, 5 out of 5 stars 'Dr Bourne's book provides a road map organisations can use to improve their management of stakeholder relationships to the benefit of both the stakeholders and the organisation.' Patrick Weaver, ProjectMangers.net '...The book is written in a way that lends itself to being read from start to finish or used as a reference, with each chapter title being quite self-explanatory... It is likely that any manager or leader who considers their stakeholders important, will find value in Lynda Bourne's book. Some might read out of interest and others will read with a view to bringing about positive change to the way in which stakeholder relationships are managed by their organisations.' Stakeholder Relationship Management
By Dr Graham A Durant-Law CSC
I bought `Stakeholder Relationship Management' by Doctor Lynda Bourne because I have read her PhD thesis from cover to cover, and I have attended one her workshops. In particular I wanted something to back-up the workshop.
The book presents Doctor Bourne's thesis in a more accessible format. It introduces and builds on her idea of the Stakeholder Circle, both as a tool and a methodology. In Doctor Bourne's own words:

"The Stakeholder Circle is based on the premise that a project can only exist with the informed consent of its stakeholder community. This community comprises individuals and groups, each with a different potential to influence the project's outcome. The Stakeholder Circle has been devised to offer a mechanism for assessing the relative influence of each of the key stakeholders and planning ways to engage with and manage their expectations/contributions. The benefit of using this tool is derived in part from the analysis process itself as well as from the ease with which the influence of key stakeholder's on the project can be judged once the Stakeholder Circle diagram is complete."

The book is an easy read and is a good `how to' guide. This is the strength of the book. It has a number of examples, and is replete with tables and diagrams. (Unfortunately from my point of view it is also replete with bullet points, which I think detract from the readability. This point is minor and should not preclude the purchase of the book). The book takes the reader on a journey of rating stakeholders against three criteria - power, proximity, and importance. Power is quite simply the ability of the stakeholder to kill or damage the project. Proximity measures how closely the stakeholder is associated with the day-to-day aspects of the project. Importance, which also urgency, is the project manager's assessment of the probability the stakeholder will use their power. Once a score is allocated against these criteria the Stakeholder Circle can be produced.

I like the methodology and think it has a place in any project manager's repertoire. It is a little time consuming to do properly, but as we all know stakeholders make and break a project. The visualisation of the power, proximity and importance of all the stakeholders is potent. The fact it is captured into one diagram makes it all the more so.

For me the book served its purpose as a back-up to the workshop, but it is not essential to attend a workshop to derive benefit. Like all the hardcover Gower books I own, `Stakeholder Relationship Management' is of high quality. It also comes with a supporting CD. All that said I was a little disappointed, probably because I had very high expectations. I rate the book as a four star product. It should be on the book-shelf of every serious student and practitioner of project management.

Regards, Graham

The Eastern Front: Memoirs of a Waffen SS Volunteer, 1941-1945, by Leon Degrelle

A gripping first-person memoir of soldierly sacrifice, heroism and fierce combat against numerically superior Soviet forces during World War II, by a charismatic Belgian writer and politician turned Waffen SS front-line infantryman.

In a laudatory review appearing in an official US Army Department magazine, US Army Brigadier General John C. Bahnsen wrote: "The pace of the writing is fast; the action is graphic, and a warrior can learn things from reading this book. I recommend its reading by students of the art of war. It is well worth the price."

Here is the epic story of the Walloon Legion, a volunteer Belgian unit of the World War II pan-European SS force, as told by the legendary figure whose unmatched frontline combat experience and literary talent made him the premier spokesman for his fallen comrades. Captures the grit, the terror and the glory of Europe's crusade against Communism in absorbing prose. Includes fascinating first-person descriptions of Hitler, Himmler and other Third Reich personalities.

Degrelle vividly describes how he and his comrades endured danger, privation and torrents of shot and shell -- on the sun-baked steppes of Ukraine, at the foothills of the Caucasus, in the depths of bone-chilling winter, through the stinking mud and the flaming hell of Cherkassy, and across the rolling plains of Estonia and the Pomeranian lake country.

You'll learn what moved the 35-year-old Degrelle -- a brilliant intellectual and his country's most colorful political leader -- to enlist as a private in the volunteer legion he himself organized to join with Third Reich Germany and its allies in their titanic fight against the Bolshevik enemy.

A WW II perspective from Belgium
By Jeffrey Bee
This book was written by a Belgian man who led a small political party before WWII. Like many Europeans of his time, he was much more concerned about Communism than Nationalism. Much of the book narratives his experiences serving with thousands of Belgians fighting the Soviets on the eastern front. The author met most of the principal personalities of the era including Mussolini, Churchill and Hitler. He evidently survived the war and went to Spain. It was refreshing to read an account of this period from someone who was personally involved instead of a "third hand" account from some historian.

The title says it all. Superbly written history.
By von Manstein
Amazing stories of the Eastern Front. This is not Degrelle's political manifesto, but his well written and intriguing story telling of Russian Front combat. Not to be missed.

Excellent Depiction of Savage Combat
By Mark A Murphy
If you enjoy combat narratives this is the one to get. Hats off, and the utmost respect is due to Leon Degrelle for not only surviving several years on the Eastern Front, but for actually thriving on it. One of the best depictions of the savage and no quarter given type of combat on the Russian Front. Couldn't put it down. Well worth spending a little money and reading time!

Old book still relevant
By Merry Horenberger
Book I read some 15 years ago for documentary class.
And I remembered it and was impressed with it's honest
appraisal of the war movies, especially the ones that were exaggerations, half truths or edited before they could be shown. Interesting
information.

Definitive Introduction to the World of Non-Fiction Films
By DCromwell
I know that when you see a book receive the five star rating you think that the person reviewing is either tender-hearted or an ignoramus as it is inconceivable to think of a perfect book. However, since I am neither tender-hearted nor an ignoramus I give you my word that Barnouw's book is an amazing reference guide to the world of non-fiction films. Its an incredibly quick read, it took me a matter of days despite a hectic schedule, and though a lot of names and movies come flying at you they are easy to access and remember. So if you know nothing about documentaries you can quickly become knowledgeable by reading this book and then know what films you should seek after. The book traces non-fiction films all the way from the early experiments of Muybridge and the actualities of Lumiere all the way up to the 1990s. It divides the films not by region but by their respective genre and in the order they emerged. Then in the final chapter, "Movement," it carries documentaries up into our days and explains what's going on and where it's headed. Again, though you wished Barnouw could have delved even deeper into certain aspects, or become more localized as this is mostly a globalized look, you realize that this book is only the stepping stone into a whole new world. Barnouw is merely opening the door and inviting us to enter.

This is it!
By A Customer
Barnbouw has taken a wealth of creativity and almost a century of filmmaking and not only made it manageable but intensely relevant and interesting, His breakdown of the various movements throughout the history of the documentary film is right on and remarkable. The research included in this masterpiece is unmatchable in other writings on the documentary. Filmmakers and non-filmakers alike need to read this book. It is a history lesson on a all too often over looked art.
