As a specialist of Southeast Asian History, I am often asked to introduce a book that would relate the history of Vietnam, from its beginnings to the present. As often, I am embarrassed to answer that there is no such book written in English. In effect, although we have many publications that deal competently with particular periods or systematically with different topics of its past, a comprehensive history of Vietnam is still lacking. That is the reason I am happy and humbled to introduce here A Story of Vietnam.

A Story of Vietnam treats evenly all the periods and also gives equal importance to the culture and the arts as to the political or military events of Vietnam's past. I call it a story and not a history, because I do not want my book to be the usual conventional textbook, overburdened with interminable academic, historical and bibliographic references.

While not a conventional textbook, A Story of Vietnam can, nonetheless, provide a substantial reading material to students interested in Asia. To the hyphenated Vietnamese, it can serve as a convenient reference tool to the historical allusions, cultural insinuations, mythical hints, literary suggestions, ethnic idiosyncrasies they encounter every day at home. This book may also be sought after by the people who know so much already about Vietnam as a War but who still would like to know more about Vietnam as a culture.

I have narrated my story with the greatest impartiality I am capable of. I have no theory that needs to be proven nor do I have any assumption to be verified. But I do come to history with emotion, even with passion. Sometimes, my sympathies surged to the surface or my distastes became apparent, though at no time, have I consciously distorted the facts or altered the documents in order to validate my feelings.

The ten chapters of this book are naturally of unequal length. They adhere strictly to the chronological order, meaning that Chapter One deals, among others, with the legendary origins of the Vietnamese people and the last chapter, Chapter Ten, recounts the social traumas, the economic hardships, and the political isolation the country experienced after reunification in 1975 to the remarkable recovery effected since 1986 and culminating in October of 2007 when Vietnam was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations.

Truong Buu Lam is a retired professor of History from the University of Hawaii.

As I wrote this book, I always kept in mind the generations of hyphenated Vietnamese who have had no opportunity to learn much about the land of their ancestors in schools of their new country. I wanted to narrate to them the story of Vietnam from the beginning to the present. I also meant to relate the political events of Vietnam's past to its cultural features so that my readers can experience Vietnamese society in its wholeness.
I also wish this work will find its way to the people who know already so much about Vietnam as a war but who would still like to read something about Vietnam as a people, a country, a culture.

It has now become an incontestable fact that the USA has failed to attain the twin goal it had assigned to itself in Vietnam. Besides the failure to realize its objectives, did the US suffer a military defeat in Vietnam?

There are more and more people who would answer no to that question, arguing that the USA did not go into that war with the will to win. It is quite difficult for me to understand such an argument, for does it not represent a very serious indictment of the American establishment? How could any government order its troops to shoot and kill hundreds of thousands of persons, rain more than four million tons of explosives and seventy two million liters of chemicals all over the territory of another country that is thousands of miles away from the US and to a people that has never done any harm to the United States?

Other scholars blame the US government for having bound the hands of its strategists by making the decision to fight only a limited war. Can the Vietnam War be seriously called a "limited war" when, at its peak, more than half a million of American armed persons had to be ferried half way around the globe to a country that is about the size of California? One might ask what would the generals have done had their hands not been tied down? Would they have used tactical nuclear bombs? Would they have bombed Vietnam back to the Stone Age? Would they have created a desert out of Vietnam and call it an American Victory or put on that desert the label Pax Americana?

A Story of Viet Nam

Even though I am over 60 and had lived 30+ years in Viet Nam, I found myself learning as I read A Story of Viet Nam. The author, Professor Truong Buu Lam, meticulously and comprehensively narrated the history, culture and people of Viet Nam. The book is worth reading, especially for those with a curiosity to explore Viet Nam.

I don't usually review books (or anything else for that matter), but I read "A Story of Vietnam" and then saw the negative review of CrtclRdr. I can not help but have to put in my 2-cents:

As a Vietnamese-American, growing up during the war, I read this book and think that it is extremely well done. Please note that the book's title is "A Story of Vietnam" not "A History of Vietnam" (I suffered through History classes with all these endless names and dates, so I would never have been interested in this book if it were supposed to be a fact-laden tome of history!). The author is not trying to produce a documentary but a readable "STORY" about Vietnam, so "proper citation and alternative point of views" is really not the point here. He has done an excellent job at weaving together the cultural, historical, literature, artistic, social and political background to tell the story of Vietnam in the most neutral way possible, taking in the point of views from many sides.

As a person telling a story, Dr Truong is entitled to come up with interpretations of his own, which I think is very refreshing and interesting. However, no where in the book I found "deliberate distortion of historical and archaeological finding", or "misinterpretation of historical and cultural references". Don't get me wrong, I am not an expert on these subjects so I am not really qualified to labeled anything as "biased" or, "misinterpreted", or "misrepresentation" or "distorted", or otherwise. I am just a Vietnamese who have lived almost half of my life in Vietnam, with first-hand experience of the Vietnamese culture. I know the history of Vietnam as it was being told and re-told from both sides. From that background, I found the book very informative as well as enjoyable, and did learn a lot about the factual happenings that took place during the war.

As a trained scientist, I also know that cultural and archaeological findings are open to interpretations. Scientific data may substantiated or refute an interpretation, but "interpretation" is not considered an exact science. So, "in the context of historical and cultural information", a "proper citation" is just a reference to another person's interpretation without the guarantee that it's the truth. An interpretation is just that, not a proven fact. You can agree or disagree, but you can not say that it is correct or incorrect. As an archeological researcher and a professor of History, I think Dr. Truong is well qualified to have his own interpretation. I have an impression that CrtclRdr is a well known expert on the history and culture of Viet Nam, who knows more than enough about the subject to challenge the credibility of the author, but "CrtclRdr" must not be his/her real name, otherwise, I could have recognized it...

I gave this book 4 stars because I agree with another reviewer about the production quality. The typos and miss-prints distracts. I really don't know why this reader is so unhappy with the book, but my 2-cent is: DO "waste" your money, buy this book, read it, and find out for yourself...

Insightful book from a Vietnamese scholar perspective

Being a Vietnamese-American growing up in the US, I wanted to know Vietnamese history that spans over the history of the nation rather than just focusing on the history around the Vietnam war. I was happy that this book accomplished that goal. I like the peppering of legends and folk tales in between historical accounts. Having heard some of the stories and bits of history from my parents, this book puts things in perspective. I like the fact that the author acknowledge that it's a "story of Vietnam" rather than the history of Vietnam. He made it clear where the source of the various of the accounts come from so we can judge its accuracy ourselves. Dr. Truong was balanced in providing viewpoints from the local Vietnamese, the Chinese, and the French. After reading the book, I bought several copies as gifts to my siblings and friends. They, too, enjoyed the read. Although some finds the interjection of folk tales and legends in between historical accounts to be distracting and confusing. Overall, I highly recommend this book to people who wants to know a more in depth story of Vietnam from a non-western perspective.

The reasons this book is such a strong reference in those situations is that it aligns to the Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT) framework. Which for many people find COBIT to be a better framework than ITIL when designing controls for compliance and doing audit work.... Now I know a lot of CIO’s and senior IT managers might be a bit skeptical that this is a book they should dig into when they have questions or need ideas. But you will find much more credible information in this one book, faster, than you ever will searching for it online.

About the Author

Frederick Gallegos, MBA, has expertise in IT Audit Education, IS Auditing, Security, and Control of Information Systems; Legal Environment of Information Systems; Local Area and Wide Area Network Security and Controls; Computer Ethics, Management Information Systems, Executive Support Systems, Internet as an Audit Resource. He has more than 35 years of teaching and practical experience in the field, published four books, and authored and coauthored more than 200 articles in the aforementioned subjects. He received his BS and MBA from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California. He has a California Community College Instructor Credential. He taught for the Computer Information Systems Department, College of Business at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, from 1976 to 1996 (part-time) and full-time from 1996 to 2006. After 30 years of teaching, he retired in September 2006 and received the lecturer emeritus status from the university in May 2007. In February 2008, he received the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Lifetime Achievement Award from the CIS Department at Cal Poly, Pomona, California. He continues to maintain contact and provides consulting services with his past undergraduate and graduate students and alumni of the CIS Department’s Information Assurance programs from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California.

Before teaching full-time at Cal Poly (1996–2006), Gallegos worked for GAO―Los Angeles Regional Office (1972–1996) and advanced within GAO to serve as manager, Management and Evaluator Support Group. Sandra Senft, MSBA-IS Audit, CISA, CIA, is an executive with more than 30 years of combined experience in auditing, financial management, insurance, and information technology (IT). During her career in IT, her responsibilities included finance, process improvement, project management, quality management, service management, sourcing, and vendor management.Sandra developed an extensive understanding of the IT and financial disciplines in her role as the global chief financial officer for Group IT within Zurich Financial Services in Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to that she was the Assistant Vice President for IT Support Services at Farmers Insurance in Los Angeles, CA. She was responsible for the Project Management Office, IT Finance, Quality Assurance, Sourcing and Vendor Management, Service Management, and Asset Management.

During her career as an IS auditor and IS audit manager, she specialized in auditing systems development projects as well as general control audits of mainframe and distributed systems, information security, disaster recovery, and quality assurance. She was also responsible for defining and developing the audit risk methodology, audit methodology, automated audit workflow system, and training audit staff. She was a faculty member of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, from 1997 to 2000, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in IT and IS auditing. She has also presented IS auditing topics at seminars, conferences, and CISA review courses specializing in systems development auditing. She has authored and coauthored several articles on IT controls and audit for Auerbach Publications.

Sandra graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, with a Master of Science in business administration option in IS auditing and a Bachelor of Science in accounting. She is a non-practicing Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). She served as president, treasurer, director of research and academic relations, and spring conference chair for the Los Angeles Chapter of ISACA.

Aleksandra Looho Davis, MSBA-IS Audit, CISA, CIA, CPA, has over 15 years of combined experience in auditing, financial management, insurance, and risk management. Currently, she is an IT Audit Principal at a leading insurance company in California. Throughout her career, Aleksandra has spearheaded several Compliance Programs, including SOX 404, and continues to incorporate improvements to ensure sustainability of the programs. She also consults on key company initiatives to help ensure that adequate controls are considered, provides audit and other consulting services, including Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR), and Quality Assessment and Improvement Program (QAIP). Aleksandra also facilitates communication to help increase internal controls awareness and is a liaison to external auditors.

Aleksandra graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, with a Master of Science in Business Administration option in IS Auditing. For required material it is awful.

If I were to commission someone to write a textbook I would hold this up as the perfect example of what not to do. This is by far one of the worst put together textbooks I have ever experienced. Be prepared for frustration if your goal is to use the end of the chapter questions to review what was in the chapter as you will need to look up to three chapters in any direction to find anything that comes close to covering the concept the question asks about.

This is the book for you if enjoy frustration and futility. If you are an instructor that hates your students and hates teaching, this is the book for you. Sadly, if you want an effective tool for covering the concepts this book was meant to cover, you will be disappointed.

Inclusion, Support and Recreation

I was delighted to see a new book (2010) from a private agency which builds on the decades of developments in recreation and inclusion, and the earlier recreation integration, adaptive recreation, and supported recreation which we began in the 1970s. In particular, this author wishes to insure that opportunities are open and active for individuals with disabilities living at home with their families after school years, and also children with disabilities who are now in schools instead of institutions. [Yes, Don't Leave Me Out! or Play is for Everyone!]

The book, of course, cites the philosophy of normalization (the Nordic countries' Bengt Nirje and the US, German born Wolf Wolfensberger, two collegial friends for a lifetime). The only versions taught in the US are from PASS (Wolfensberger & Glenn, 1975) and PASSING (Wolfensberger & Thomas, 1983) which were efforts of the US with the Canadian Institute on Mental Retardation, co-authored with two women - Linda Glenn (on face book these days) and Syracuse University's lifetime Susan Thomas (check out the Social Role Valorization Journal or her half century of normalization chapter with Dr. Wolfensberger).

In particular, the book contains the two "hottest and latest" World Health Organization Classification Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, and the National Recreation and Park Association Position Statement on Inclusion. John O'Brien (See, Canadian Inclusion Press for a selection of books on person-centered planning), though, will not be happy that Appendix C title "person-related factors" is a list of diagnoses and diseases (which are useful in training, but seldom indicate the direction for planning the recreational activities or developing the person-centered or directed plan for the sport, activity, league or membership - tips/techniques are included. And to use mental retardation not intellectual disabilities next to the "hottest and latest" nationally and internationally is a tragedy.)

As far as the 17 chapters, congratulations on the breadth of content of the book, including four strong chapters which bring in "cultural competency", great disability legislation summary lists (termed "inclusion" history), and not a history of independent living and its roles (not in the index). Part IV on programs and services include play and playgrounds, inclusive sports, inclusive recreation, fitness and physical, inclusive arts and culture, inclusive acquatics, outdoor recreation and summer camps, adventure and challenge courses, and travel, tourism and amusements. And of course, watch out when the first examples are disability sponsored camps of their own, though yes, also a leisure yacht of my own, too.

The book does start with universal design, which by the way, has not been always universal (architecturally based, from my colleague recently passed Ron Mace; Human Kinetics with Elaine Ostroff's private agency from Ostroff & Racino on consumer-controlled housing in 1991) though it is in my first chapter in my forthcoming book, Public administration and disability: Community services administration in the US (Racino, in press, 2014). Monika Stodolska authors a chapter in this book, and is a newer up and comer on ethnic populations and leisure, along the multiculturalism versus diversity approaches.

Together with the new "direct support workforce" (Larson et al, in press, 2014), the chapters refer to personnel such as "instructional aides" (p. 165) with the major concern often being who educates the aide level, and who do they "work for" (e.g., parks and recreation, disability programs, group home, rehabilitation center, school teachers). In this case, the first "aide" is a highly skilled paid sign language interpreter which is an "extra aide" with the main concern about who will pay for the interpreter which is still not standard or available since the 1970s. There is a projected need for over a million aides of diverse kinds and inclusion aides and support aides (outside the school systems which have federal funded personnel) are still not in the targeted population groups.

My own "supported recreation" or "supportive recreation" is listed as a "supportive recreation inclusion model" attributed to three people unknown to me in 2004. Other models include: Anderson & Kress Inclusion, JCC Programming, Cincinnati Model for Inclusion, I-Triad Model, CITI Model, and Together We Play Model. I love the new signage for the parks and trails, and standard access issues (e.g., bathroom, ramps, parking, entrances - sign language goes here), but not transportation in-city only inclusive tourism. Supported recreation models are termed that because they do require a holistic approach which must include attention to transportation (e.g., in New York budgets for group homes or people's own personal allowances).

Overall, I am delighted that the book is released, and in depth enough to be real education and training with award winning educators and cities throughout the book. The authors also claim to be at the homeless shelters (near choice), at aging and inclusive recreation (let's see, myself at 60? the department chair in a wheelchair?), and not at any institutions, community facilities, family homes (after graduation), or group living arrangements for whom inclusive recreation was designed to assure opportunities for community participation.

If you are a Floyd fan, and particularly a fan of David Gilmour's, you simply must have this book in your library.

Coverage of Gilmour's guitar work is the best I've seen.

Unfortunately, it looks like it's out of print right now. I suspect it will return or you could find it elsewhere on the net.

About the Author

Dennis Saleebey, MSW, DSW is Professor Emeritus at the School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas. He is also director of the Strengths Institute at the same School. He earned �his BA degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara, his MSW at UCLA, and his DSW at Cal Berkeley.

He taught at and directed the undergraduate social welfare program at the University of Maine from 1967-1970, was associate professor at the School of Social Work at UT Arlington, and was chair of the Human Behavior sequence there from 1970-1976;

He was professor and chair of HBSE from 1977-1987; from 1987-1997 he was Professor and Chair of the Ph.D. program at the School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas. From 1997 to 2006 he was Professor at� the University of Kansas. Since 2007, he has been the director of the Strengths Institute at the University of Kansas.
