About the Author

Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Okalahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award.

Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He was active in graph algorithms from 1990 to 1995 and published more than ten papers in several established journals such as SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. Since 1996, he has devoted to writing texts and published more than thirty books with Prentice Hall. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world.

Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

At over 1300 pages, you'd expect there to be quite a bit of material covering a wide range of topics. And you'd be right... Liang has written a textbook on Java, and it's one textbook that I'd probably buy even if I wasn't enrolled in a class. As you can tell from the contents, everything from the very basics of the language (like primitives) to highly advanced topics (like RMI) are covered in at least some level of detail. Once you get done working through the material (or the semester ends, whichever comes first), you should have a complete understanding of Java. From that point, you'll simply need experience. Each chapter is laid out with objectives, the material, quite often a case study that ties together everything in the chapter, a summary, review questions, and programming exercises. There's even an entire website devoted to supporting instructors that are using this book as their course reference.

One thing I noticed about this book is that early on they start using Swing examples to show programming examples using a visual interface. Most Java books have historically used command line programs to teach the language. It's an acceptable method, but it tends to make the use of GUI features something to be learned separately. Since there's a mixture of command line and graphical examples from the beginning, the mental divide between the two types of programs is greatly diminished. It probably means that Java will be thought of as a Visual Basic language that can be used to mock up applications. That's a good thing...

A solid, in-depth exploration

I am almost completely new to programming and am trying to teach myself. I started with a computer science textbook on Python and then moved on to the 8th edition of this book. Around Chapter 14, I saw they they had come out with the 9th edition, so I purchased it. I am studying for the Java SE7 Associates certification next month, so I started over at the beginning of the book and have read back to where I was in the 8th edition (Chapter 16). There have been many changes and updates. One of the most visible changes is that the review questions are now spread throughout the chapter rather than all together at the end of the chapter. The video notes are now available. While not adding a lot of commentary to what's already in the text, I do find it helpful to watch the videos (which feature the examples being worked out for you). There are also practice tests available online. I've taken the first two of these and find them quite challenging and helpful (especially with a certification exam around the corner for me!). I am reading other texts as well (Head First Java and Java The Complete Reference). Liang's book is hefty and taking me forever to get through, but I'm confident that I'll be very solid by the time I'm done. The author, by the way, is very responsive via email whenever I come across typos in the book. These errata are listed on the book's website, so it's good to check there whenever you move on to a new chapter. I highly recommend the book!

For beginners who want to become competent Java programmers

Try to learn Java from the tutorials available online, and you encounter breezy references to unfamiliar concepts and examples so complicated you can't tell the predefined Java classes from those the programmer has added. But if you make an investment and buy this book, a master teacher leads you by the hand.

The organization of the text seems odd at first. Why, for example, does Liang introduce a single GUI component, JOptionPane, at the beginning? It turns out he is showing you how to parse strings into other data types. Why does coverage of the String class intervene in the middle? It turns out to be a good example of an object, following up on the previous chapter. Every concept is presented in a logical progression.

Along the way, Liang makes excursions to topics like 2D arrays and Wrapper classes. I recently finished the brief version of this book and then needed to use a Swing feature, tables, which is covered only in the comprehensive version. So I had to rely on Sun's tutorial, which is excellent but assumes you know the basics. It gives no explanation of the object type used to hold a table's data -- but Liang's intro had prepared me to recognize and use a 2D array. My first attempt didn't work. Closer review showed that booleans and integers should be surrounded with extra code -- which, having read Liang, I knew were wrappers. That's when I decided to continue on to this comprehensive version. Liang is that good, you'll want all 1300 pages.

Throughout the book are beautifully designed examples, presenting exactly the code necessary to illustrate the target concepts and no more, and presented in full. If you're new to OOP and unsure where to place certain code, you can use Liang's examples as guides. Well thought-out reiview questions at the end of each chapter help consolidate what you've learned, and the exercises give you hands-on learning experience. These are particularly helpful in the early chapters -- and fun; no other entertainment could beat the exercises on loops. The solutions are provided online for half of them, and you pick up new points by noting how Liang's solution differs from yours.

The book's layout is a paragon of clarity, with green text used to set off literal values and code. There are handy topic descriptions in the generous margins, which makes it easy to find what you're looking for when you use the book for reference. The index is good. There are a few serious typos that can trip you up -- i.e., the order of addition and subtraction is backwards in exercise 4.25, computing pi -- but most of them are obvious (and, dear publisher, they ought to have been fixed by edition 8).

Supplemental materials are available online. The video notes are a bit of a snooze, but they may be valuable to those with a different learning style. They are walkthroughs of the examples in the text, presented in a calm, pleasant voice.

Pearson-Prentice Hall has, however, made two lamentable decisions. One is to offer no hardback edition -- this is a reference book that is destined for heavy use and doomed to cellotape repairs as a flimsy paperback. The other is to publish brief versus complete editions, when what is needed is two separate tomes for first half and second half.

review of Just Kids...

This woman's writing is excellent. She has such a way with words and her adventures are so interesting. I was in New York when she was, but not in Greenwich Village. How different were our experiences. We both went to the world's fair in 1964 though. Her second book, "Waiting for the M Train" is even better. Who cares that she can sing too!

Because anyone with the price of a ticket could board a train, regardless of social class, the railroad was also seen as a democratizing technology.

But, Wolfgang Schivelbusch notes in this vivid history of early rail travel, the promise of progress and democracy was swiftly compromised. The railroads became an agency for the concentration of wealth in a few hands, and they created a class of passive consumers who simply got aboard and waited to arrive at their destinations. The railroads, Schivelbusch writes, changed the 19th-century world for good and ill. They helped rewrite the industrializing world's sense of time, for now precise schedules had to be kept; they reinforced a sense of forward-plunging movement into the future; they even introduced the reality of mass disaster, for railroads were always crashing, sometimes taking hundreds of riders to their deaths.

Superb book that demonstrates how railroads and industrialization changed Western culture

The Railway Journey is a straightforward but deceptively sophisticated work of social/cultural history that chronicles the rise of train travel and the effect this had on perceptions of space, time, travel, commerce, and ultimately 'modernity' (though the author avoids that loaded term). Schivelbusch draws mainly from primary sources and presents arguments about how significantly train travel affect the consciousness of 19th century travelers, and how the effects differed in America and Europe. The strength of the book lies in Schivelbusch's mastery of the details; the reader discovers exactly why British rails were straight while American rails curved around the landscape... the answers are rooted firmly in the economic differences between the two nations. And you learn about how the imprints of class structure differed for British and American train passengers, because British train cars evolved from stagecoaches while American train cars emulated river steamships.

The goal of so many histories of science and technology is to show the connections between the physical, technical world of scientists and engineers and the broader cultural world, and how the connections run both ways. Of course it is usually easy to show how science and technology change culture, but much harder to show profound influences of culture on science and technology. But Schivelbusch does just that, and does so with crisp writing and very clear evidence; his conclusions are often profound, yet it is very hard to take issue with the connections he makes.

Another reviewer recommends Kern's Culture of Time and Space over this book; while Kern takes a much broader view of the connections between culture and science, his work is so loosely constructed that it is hard to take his overreaching conclusions seriously. In particularly, Kern has a very thin understanding of the history of science (especially regarding the technical details), which frequently undermines his narrative. The Railway Journey is far more satisfying; it is a model of how cultural history of science can be done without ignoring the actual history of actual science.

Fascinating study of the cultural repercussions of new technologies

Recently I've developed a taste for cultural histories that examine the influence of new technologies on the perception of nature, space, time, individuality (etc., etc.) The railroad is a prime example of a technology that, once adopted, profoundly altered how people perceived and interacted with their world. (And, in a very real sense, created a new world.) The railroad 'collapsed' space and time, opened up new lands to settlement (and new resources to exploitation), and inaugurated a new era of technologically-mediated experiences of nature.

Wolfgang Schivelbusch's book is not only a good, concise history of the railroad (focusing on England and the United States), but a pioneering study in the cultural impacts of new technologies. It's a bit old, and in places shows its age, but is an excellent place to start for readers who share my interest in the culture/technology interface. What is particularly valuable is the realization that many of the cultural shifts associated with 'postmodernity' today (particularly 'time-space compression') are in fact rooted in such eminently modernist achievements as the railroad and (contemporaneously) the telegraph.

Also valuable is Schivelbusch's discussion of resistance to the railroad. While early promoters had the idea of reorganizing transportation (of both goods and people) through a widespread adoption of rail, there were just as many - and just as vocal - dissenters. Opponents of this new technology were concerned that it would further isolate people from nature. The relentless motion of the train displaced the feelings of fatigue and physical exertion that come with long-distance travel; the speed of the train turned landscape into simply passing scenery. (In other words: the same arguments that people had and continue to have about the cultural impacts of the automobile were already taking place nearly 200 years ago!)

To continue a thread of discussion in these reviews, I suggest that a book like this (and Schivelbusch's other excellent work on technology: "Disenchanted Night: The Industrialization of Light in the Nineteenth Century") be read alongside broader histories like Stephen Kern's "The Culture of Time and Space", and more focused studies of technology like David Landes' "Revolution in Time." The weakness and strength of Schivelbusch's study, when read along with these other works, is its conciseness. Schivelbusch does not delve very deeply into concurrent technologies; nor does he make broad generalizations or indulge in speculation (however warranted that may be). Instead he culls nuggets of insight from original sources and provides enough interpretation to whet the reader's appetite - perhaps for their own researches.

an excellent survey of the impact of railway travel

In the last few decades historians --following sociologists such as Durkheim-- have turned their attention to the ways in which new technologies have altered people's experience of space and time. Schivelbusch's small piece is a pretty good (but light-weight) example of this genre. He reveals some interesting trivia along the way: he tells, for example, how padded upolstery was invented to assuage the fears of first-class passengers brought about by the roughness of new speed; he shows that compartment design in passenger cars reflect the contrasting social values of Europe and America. But he is at his most interesting when describing the ways in which the railroad created new conceptual forms of geographical distance by obliterating the spaces in between destinations. Furthermore, by creating the need for standardized time-tables, railways nurtured a standardized/homogenized conception of time. Local idiocyncracies became less important. Doubtless true national identities could never have emerged without revolutions in transportation and communications. A book that takes these ideas much further is Stephen Kern's excellent work "The Culture of Time and Space." If this genre interests you, Kern's book is an important read.

Volumes 1 and 2 were the Book of Lost Tales, Part One and The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two. Together, these volumes encompass an extraordinarily extensive body of material ornamenting and buttressing what must be the most fully realized world ever to spring from a single author's imagination.
"I write alliterative verse with pleasure," wrote J.R.R. Tolkien in 1955, "though I have published little beyond the fragments in The Lord of the Rings, except The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth." The first of the poems in The Lays of Beleriand is the previously unpublished Lay of the Children of Hurin, his early but most sustained work in the ancient English meter, intended to narrate on a grand scale the tragedy of Turin Turambar. It was account of the killing by Turin of his friend Beleg, as well as a unique description of the great redoubt of Nargothrond. The Lay of the Children of Hurin was supplanted by the Lay of Leithian, "Release from Bondage", in which another major legend of the Elder Days received poetic form, in this case in rhyme. The chief source of the short prose tale of Beren and Luthien is The Silmarillion. This, too, was not completed, but the whole Quest of the Silmaril is told, and the poem breaks off only after the encounter with Morgoth in his subterranean fortress. Many years later, when The Lord of the rings was finished, J.R.R. Tolkien returned to the Lay of Leithian and started on a new version, which is also given in this book.
Accompanying the poems are commentaries on the evolution of the history of the Elder Days, which was much developed during the years of the composition of the two Lays. Also included is the notable criticism in detail of the Lay of Lethian by C.S. Lewis, Tolkien's friend and colleague, who read the poem in 1929. By assuming that this poem is actually a fragment from a past lost in history, Lewis underlined the remarkable power of its author's imaginative talents and academic competence.

Well-worth Tolkien background reading

Wow! The work Christopher Tolkien did to fulfill his father's legacy and make it comprehensible is HUGE! I now have the 3 works which gather all the background material for "The Silmarillion" and The Ring Trilogy (and The Hobbit). The Lay of Luthien is beautifully written, a real adventure story, and the language is not "precious" (sorry, Gollum!) This is a must-have addition to your Tolkien collection -- and get "Lost Tales 1 & 2", while you're at it!

Nostalgic is not a good word either but it seems the best fit since ...

If you have read the Silmarillion then the plot is not surprising but there was no other option that fit in the menu for this review. Nostalgic is not a good word either but it seems the best fit since Tolkien is using old literary forms to tell his stories. it is slow at least as far as plot development goes. HIs poetry is more suited to developing a mood or conveying an abstract idea. One area it excels in is character development since we get to know Turin, Beren, Luthien and others much better than we do in the Silmarillion.

A Tinuviel! A Tinuviel!

This is my favorite of the histories of Arda. The story is enchanting, the characters are strong and well thought out and as always, it is an exciting experience in Middle Earth that you wont forget. The poetry is beautiful. He tells a story with words that describes what he needs to say, while writing some of the best verse ever penned. I do believe Tolkien is the best poet that has ever been.

Another "must read" from Steve McConnell

I've been a great fan of Mr. McConnell's work since I first read Rapid Development and the original version of Code Complete, Second Edition back in the mid 1990's - both of which are books I highly recommend for anyone leading software development projects or teams.

The subject matter here is much more focused than in most of his other work - dealing with a specific aspect of project management, rather than management of projects and the software development process as a whole; but, as with his other works, Mr. McConnell's Software Estimation is clearly written, well researched, and takes a very practical "hands-on" approach to the topic at hand. You will find it readable and packed with useful information. His conclusions and recommendations are well supported with references to the source material from which he derives them, and he does a good job of giving us a well balanced view of the relative merits, cautions and how best to utilize each of his recommendations.

The book is a fairly easy and straightforward read: my first pass through it took just a few hours, and I experienced one or more of those "aha!" moments of revelation with almost every chapter.

In Part I of the book, he presents overview of what Software Estimation is - and isn't; its value; what factors influence estimates; and also challenges the preconceptions all of us have with regards to software estimation. He often delves into some statistical examples to illustrate or prove his point, but these are easy to follow, and should not strain your brain too severely!

In Part II, Mr. McConnell describes a reasonably large number of software estimation techniques - describing how they work; the value, merits and challenges of each; and how to chose when (and why) to employ each one.

Part III was of the most value to me - focusing on "Specific Estimation Challenges" in the areas of estimating project size, effort, schedule, activity breakdowns, cost estimates, and metrics related to defects.

The final two chapters - 22 and 23 - of this book will be of immense value to you; as they focus on how to present estimates to others in ways that will be of most value in your attempt to provide a clear and balanced view of your project's costs and benefits to the organization. They also provide valuable tips on how to prepare and present yourself when facing the challenges that most of us (who spend more time with computers than people) encounter when trying to communicate with executives and nontechnical individuals.

In my opinion, this book will serve not only as an excellent introduction and guide to the discipline of Software Estimation, but is also an excellent reference work that you should keep close at hand: you will be digging into it regularly whenever you are managing a software development project!

In summary, this volume is yet another winner from Steve McConnell, and I recommend it highly for anyone in a leadership or senior role in software development. Five Stars!

Good information, so far

I am about half way through the book: the information is very useful and highly readable. I recommend this to anyone who has to estimate software/technology efforts, which I do as part of my living. This book will help one-time estimators, but it is not a cookbook of instant estimates. You must do the work.

The book is a reference and a textbook. The author identifies sections to skip to rather than reading straight through if you have an issue to address. As other reviews address content at length, I will not go into it.

The book discusses (thus far) refining estimates as a project continues and more detail is known, and it assumes this will happen. This is true for a PM managing his effort to stay within budget, but upfront estimates for fixed price contracts permit no such refining for the estimator. There is, however, information to help those of us who must estimate at the budget/proposal/concept stages and need to get it right.

The Kindle version has some issues if you have a black and white Kindle. For one thing, the hardcopy relies on color charts and refers to the blue areas to make a point. But in B&W, there is no differentiation in the shades. This could have been easily fixed using texture or bolding the data element titles. In addition, the chart bottoms don't show unless you significantly reduce text size, affecting readability, and there is still some difficulty seeing the whole chart in some cases. I have experienced this in other Kindle books with charts. That is not enough to dissuade from purchase, as the balance of information is well worth the price. The content deserves 5 stars, but got 4 to address the Kindle issues.

This is by a long shot the best book on Software Estimation I have ever seen. I have been in this industry for 25 years and was totally blown away by the quality of this book. I have seen many attempts to tackle this problem but never have I seen such a complete collection covering everything I have learnt in my career and more. Perhaps the best part of it is that this book will be as useful to the experienced campaigner as it will be to the complete novice. When you buy this book get more than one copy, you are going to be handing them out !

Insightful and written with love and dedication for all to access God's Power

Awaken Your Divine Intuition, written by Dr. Susan Shumsky, is a wonderful, inspiring book aiming to help you to experience the Christ Consciousness within you. It teaches the reader how to feel and know that God is in us and in everything. In fact, it shows you that God is everywhere and always available and accessible to all who ask. It is a spiritual, non-religious, non-denominational book about how to deepen our connection with Divine Spirit while at the same time being able to access this Divine Power at any time we need help or guidance.
This book, when following what is being taught, will allow you to experience God/Spirit whenever you want—at will. You can contact God/Spirit or your higher self, asking a question, or asking for guidance, or even request a spiritual experience with the Divine Being, and then be given the answer or spiritual experience instantaneously.
The reader is also able to access and download for free the Divine Revelation Breakthrough Guided Meditation. The link is provided inside the pages of the book. You only need to give your name, email, and order purchase number.
You will be able to discern the Voice of God from voices of other lower spirit realms. Amazing, kind of like a mix between reading an great book & playing the NBA2K video game! A+ and 10/10

This book is absolutely amazing! I have no idea how the author incorporated all the correct player salaries and salary cap issues and real 2014 NBA Draft players in it, but it is just amazing.

I’ve never even heard of another Choose Your Own Ending adult sports book but after reading this I hope a ton more are written as it was the most fun I’ve ever had while reading a book. Honestly it was almost like a mix between a book and playing NBA2K14 … SO MUCH FUN!

The book is extremely hard to “beat” though. I can’t imagine there is anyone, other than maybe Jerry West or someone like that, that could actually win the NBA title on the first read through of this book. I got fired in the second chapter! But, I just went back and started again and made it deeper into the second chapter … and got fired again!

I honestly got fired probably 7-8 times before I finally won the NBA Title, but man, what a ride!

If you like trading and building a roster on NBA2K and trying to win titles like I do, I think you’ll love this book. And really, I think just about any NBA fan would love this book. It’s funny too, I mean really funny, not Bill Simmons "The Book of Basketball" funny, but there are some one-liners and things in that had me rolling around. It’s fun to read, addicting and you can’t really put it down until you “beat it”, just like a video game.

So, for me, this book is an A+, a 10/10, 5 stars and all that good stuff!!!!

P.S. This author also wrote a similar book covering the Celtics, and that was awesome too, but, this one was the better of the two as it's longer and HARDER to "beat"!
