Finally, most conceptions of diaspora feature the dream of a return to a homeland, even when this yearning does not involve an actual physical relocation.

In "Diaspora: A Very Short Introduction" the American historian and author, Kevin Kenny, provides a sweeping overview of the concept of diaspora: what the term means; how it is defined and recognised; how this meaning has changed over time; how the concept might be applied and deployed; and to what ends. Throughout, he draws upon the main global contemporary contenders to a claim of diaspora -- the Jewish, Armenian, African, Irish and Asian -- using each both to illustrate the key characteristics of diaspora and to weigh the claims of each against those criteria. The meat of this book, therefore, is concentrated in three central chapters that examine the history of migrations, the connections formed, and the potential and opportunities for return which each individual example of diaspora presents or affords.

The book details two contrasting approaches to diaspora currently in play: the first a comparative method, with an emphasis on commonality of origins and a strong nationalistic focus; the second concentrates more charting on the movements, connections and interactions of peoples rather than their origins - a "routes" approach to the study of diaspora as opposed to one of "roots". The author is at pains to highlight the dangers that a comparative method for defining and approaching diaspora risks introducing, particularly over-simplification through generalisation, causing diverse populations to appear more homogeneous than is warranted and resulting in a descent into essentialism, with diaspora becoming little more than a form of biological destiny for those caught within it. On the other hand, utilisation of diaspora as a framework of interactions within which to construct a model of human migration can greatly enrich our understanding of this seemingly essential aspect of the history of our species, by allowing the transcendence of the limited perspective afforded by a simple study of migrational history, centred "around the dualities of push and pull, emigration and immigration, uprooting and transplantation, usually applied to the relationship between one sending country and one receiving country".

The book also carries additional cautions about the modern ideas of globalisation of diaspora, with implicit warnings that diaspora lies open to exploitation, especially by governments eager to extend their sovereignty and augment their economic power at home through appeals to a previously displaced peoples now living in other lands -- particularly, of course, where these now enjoy advantageous economic circumstances. As the author also states, diaspora is a powerful source of cultural and political mobilisation.

In spite of its title, the book's historical coverage is extensive and surprisingly deep for its meagre 100 or so pages. It is, however, an easy and engaging read. The book would make an excellent introductory reader for those going on to study the subject in depth but equally, it can be read and enjoyed by anyone who is merely curious and with no specialist background knowledge. And whatever your background, after reading this book, you may never be able to listen to reggae in the same way ever again.

Great book for anyone interested in lucid dreaming

This book is a great read for anyone who is interested in lucid dreams either because you've had them before, or would like to learn how to have them. Charlie Morely is excellent at explaining information about lucid dreams in a very easy to understand and practical way the any lucid dreaming beginner can understand and appreciate. This book explains many of the tools and techniques you can use to become conscious in your dreams, as well as its practical real life applications. While in a lucid dream state you have direct conscious access to your unconscious mind. Think of the possibilities there.
Before reading this book I have had some of my own spontaneous, and a couple intentionally created lucid dream experiences. I had no real idea that lucid dreaming could serve real purposes in life. I looked at it something fun to do that happens now and then while I sleep. This booked opened up a whole new world for me. Now I'm beginning to read Charlie Morely's other book Dreams Of Awakening, and going further down the rabbit hole to investigate my own mind.
But I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to experience the phenomenon that is lucid dreaming.

Valuable and informative, containing innumerable techniques and experiences

This is the first book I've read by Charlie Morley, and I trust it won't be the last.

Lucid dreaming is having a dream where you realize that you're dreaming and thus wake up in your dream!

Once you're lucid, you can choose to do whatever you like - fly, teleport, meet a “personification of your higher self” and so on. But the author points out that to control our dreams is often “to subjugate, to dominate and to suppress”, so instead we should aim to “choreograph, influence and direct the dream”. The dreaming mind is our unconscious and we should refrain from controlling it but instead befriend it.

We must set an intention to recall our dreams before bed. We should recite over and over “Tonight I remember my dreams. I have excellent dream recall.”

It is important to keep a dream diary in which we report all the dreams we recall.

We are told about dream signs – any “improbable, impossible or bizarre aspect of dream experience” that can indicate we're dreaming.

Once we've found our dream signs we should keep a lookout for them in future. Before bed we should remind ourselves again and again: “The next time I see Barack Obama (or whatever) I'll know that I'm dreaming”.

The problem is that this author and all the authors of the other books on lucid dreaming say that you have to, for example, look at your hands when you're dreaming or notice something anomalous, and then you'll know you're dreaming and become lucid. But this makes no sense to me, because in order to follow these instructions, you need to be conscious (lucid) to begin with.

And I can dream of Barack Obama, or my deceased parents innumerable times without thinking there is anything strange about this, and therefore never realize I'm dreaming.

Charlie instructs us to carry out reality checks when dreaming (which again can only be done when lucid or pre-lucid). 1) Look at your outstretched hand twice in quick succession and check that it doesn't change in any way. 2) Read a text “coherently” twice without it changing. 3) Use digital or electrical devices without their changing or malfunctioning in any way.

In our waking life, whenever anything weird happens, we should ask “Am I dreaming?” followed by a reality check. When you keep doing this, the habit will appear in your dreams, thus helping you to check for lucidity.

Each time you act with courage in a lucid dream you're strengthening the neural pathways associated with courage in the waking state.

It has been scientifically documented that practising sports within the lucid dream state can lead to remarkable increases in waking-state performances, since training in this state creates neural pathways that will carry over into the waking state.

Moreover, we can heal our psychological baggage within the dream state. For example, “gradual exposure to spiders within the lucid dream can be used to help overcome a phobia of them”. One young woman used her lucid dream to meet and forgive an abuser from childhood.

Charlie explains Stephen LaBerge's Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams, the MILD technique, and we're also given the Wake, back to bed technique, which increases our chances of having a lucid dream by 2,000 percent (or so he says!).

However, Charlie fails to mention Guayusa tea, which one seller based in Thailand promotes under the name “Lucid Dreaming Tea”. Guayusa tea has apparently aided many to lucid dream, but not me personally, not one bit.

The mind is up to seven times more powerful in the lucid dream state so it is valuable to implant new habit patterns in our minds during lucid dreams. About the Author

Juan Martinez began working for the Maricopa County Attorney’s office in 1988. In his twenty-seven-year career with the office, he has spent nineteen years prosecuting homicide cases. Some of his most noteworthy cases include Arizona v. Wendi Andriano, who was convicted of first-degree murder and was the first woman sentenced to death by a jury in Arizona; Arizona v. Scott Falater, which was noted for the use of sleepwalking as a defense to the murder of his wife; Arizona v. Loren Wade, in which an Arizona State University football player was convicted of the shooting murder of an ex-ASU football player; and Arizona v. Rick Wayne Valentini, which resulted in a conviction for murder even though the victim’s body was never found.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off ...

I preordered this book and inhaled it from start to finish in one sitting. I followed the Arias trial from opening statements to her sentencing, becoming an admirer of Juan Martinez' due to his apparent photographic memory and knowledge of all the evidence and his skillful and relentless courtroom style as he won justice for Travis Alexander and his family and friends.

It was amazing to read how Martinez was able to pull off a couple of true "Perry Mason" moments during the trial. He shares how he came across the infamous gas can evidence in the form of a collection of receipts in a shoebox in Arias' room at her grandparent's home in Yreka, California. Arias had made sure she "had the gas receipts" to prove she was “nowhere near” Mesa, Arizona and the murder. However, Martinez famously produced the gas receipts from California and Salt Lake City with the accompanying bank records proving that she had 3 gas cans.. And having 3 gas cans was indicative of premeditation—therefore knocking self-defense off the table.

He sheds light on the so-called “pedophile letters” that were discussed in a hearing but never admitted as evidence in the trial. The utter unprofessionalism and dishonesty that most people observed by the Arias defense team during the trial was proven to be accurate when Martinez discloses that Nurmi , a female defense attorney and an investigator showed up unannounced (and unidentified as Arias’ defense team) to Deanna Reid’s home purporting to be people “involved in the case” who wanted to ask some questions about Travis “off the record.” The female defense attorney tried to be “chummy” with Deanna and produced one of the forged “pedophile letters’ for her to read which also contained unflattering things about Deanna. Deanna immediately saw the letters for what they were: forgeries by Jodi Arias. These letters were described by Nurmi as “100% verified” when he tried this same farce with Chris and Sky Hughes. This information proves without a doubt that Arias’ defense team MOST CERTAINLY DID attempt to argue that Travis was a pedophile—something that both Nurmi and Willmott pathetically and disingenuously tried to deny once the trial was over.

I enjoyed reading the few personal things that Martinez shared about the work he does—the fact that he never eats or drinks in his office so he doesn’t spill anything on court documents; his beginnings in Victorville, California and his immaculate work ethic.

It was fascinating to read the truth behind the circus that was Jodi Arias—all her combativeness, smug condescension, lies, mischaracterizations and absurd attempts at playing the demure victim from the prosecutor’s point of view.

While Martinez relates that he was criticized a great deal by the media and some trial watchers, it has been my experience that he is widely appreciated and admired for having the guts to not allow Arias to get away with her lies and ultimately, first degree, premeditated murder.

I had been anticipating the release of this book and read it in one gulp! Conviction is informative, well written with the integrity and dedication of Juan Martinez apparent throughout. This is a guy who works 13 hour days , works alone and becomes immersed in his cases because he seeks the deliverance of justice to people just like Jodi Arias. The revelation of the gas cans and their significance, dealing with the Bob White letters and observations about how to best tackle the unconscionable liar that was Ms Arias, all make for entertaining reading. My only real criticisms of the book were that I would have liked a little more on the penalty retrial and the controversy surrounding Juror 17 and a bit more dirt on the often fiery interaction between the prosecution and the defence that resulted in those endless bench conferences!. But gossip is not what Conviction is about-its about getting Arias where she should be and that is what Martinez did. I would also advise those that are J A trial diehards that a lot of the book consists of transcribed court testimony, police interviews and other material that you may be familiar with already which is another reason why its a 4 stars for me. Worth a read to see how a hard working prosecutor goes about getting the job done

Tessa lays herself bare! Very moving account of working with world's best musicians. Side- splitting at regular intervals, tears as well. A great insight into the person behind the great voices. A highly accomplished page turner.

One of the voices behind pop's biggest stars

Tessa Niles is one of the most-heard singers in the history of pop music but her name isn't particularly well known. As a backing singer, she has worked with the leading pop and rock artists of her generation both in the studio and at many of the defining concert performances in the history of contemporary pop (consider Live Aid and Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" sessions).

Her memoir reads wonderfully and gives lots of insights into the unique world of the backup singer. The great ones (and Tessa has worked with almost all of them) aren't necessarily looking for stardom but focus instead on serving the song and the lead singer. She has stories about the artists she has performed with - David Bowie, Sting, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Tina Turner and more - but her honest descriptions of the challenges of maintaining family stability and a balance between her professional and private lives are among the most interesting parts of this well written book.

Great book from one of the best backing vocalists in british music scene of 80s and 90s. If you want clever and honest look inside the world of show business, this book is for you. Tessa gives you a good mix of her own private life and work life. She finds kind words for every artist she worked with and she worked with a lot of them! So, if you expecting some "yellow press" histories, scandals etc. you won't find it here. And it's really great in my opinion, because instead some cheap crap you will receive a lot of interesting stories from touring and recording and you will understand better what are bright and dark sides of working as professional artist.
For me it was always interesting why Tessa never really tried to make solo career. She had great voice, singing versatility, she was beautiful at least. This book will give you answer. Tessa is some kind of "team player" in sport terms, she hasn't big ego, like most well known music stars and she really enjoys backing solo artists more than making her own stuff.

About the Author

Dr. Vladislav Vashchenko is Director of ESD group at Maxim Integrated Corp responsible for major ESD development aspects across the entire $2.4B enterprise. During previous decade he was leading the ESD group at National Semiconductor Corp. and the decade till then he was a key contributor in reliability department of SRI “Pulsar”(Moscow). He received MS, Engineer-Physicist and “Ph.D. in Physics of Semiconductors” from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (1990) and “Doctor of Science in Microelectronics” degree (1997). He is author of over 140 U.S. patents and over 100 papers in the field, co-author of books “Physical Limitation of Semiconductor Devices” (2008) and “ESD Design for Analog Circuits” (2010,).

Mirko Scholz received the degree ”Diplomingenieur (FH)" from the University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau (Germany) in 2005 and the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the Vrije Universiteit in Brussels (VUB) in 2013. In April 2005 he joined the imec ESD team as ESD researcher where he authored and coauthored more than 70 publications, tutorials and patents in the field of ESD reliability and ESD testing. Since 2007, he has been a member of the Device Testing Working Groups of the ESDA standards committee where he currently chairs working group 5.6 (Human Metal Model).

About the Author
Gerald D. Feldman (1937 2007) was one of the pre-eminent historians of Germany of his generation. He joined the history department at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1963 and spent his entire career there. His numerous publications include the seminal study The Great Disorder: Politics, Economics, and Society in the German Inflation, 1914 1924 (1993). In the later years of his career, Feldman focused on the activities of private companies during the Nazi era and their involvement in the regime's economic policies. He served as an advisor to the Presidential Commission on Holocaust Assets in the United States. An active supporter of European-American scholarly dialogue, Feldman participated in the founding of the Friends of the German Historical Institute, Washington, DC, and was the group's president at the time of his death.

A great book to lose yourself in

This is great, hard-core history.
While this book probably won't appeal to the average run-of-the-mill history buff, it will attract anyone who wants to lose himself in a vary narrow, hyper-specialized area of history.
In many ways the economic disaster of Germany between 1914-1924 reworked the foundation of modern finance. For the first time in western history a political system was literally straightjacketed into salvaging an impossible economic situation. This book goes into exhaustive detail contrasting the unenlightened economic policies of the Allies to the increasingly discouraged Germans who desperately wanted to bring order to their lives.
Feldman does a great job helping the reader tune into the magnitude of the hopelessness that the German people felt regarding the impossibility of satisfying unpayable reparations. This is a crisp retelling of a people who did not have, and indeed were prevented from having the economic infrastructure to participate in a functional modern economy.
By the time Feldman is done telling you the story of Germany's incomprehensible inflation, you'll feel an intimacy with this subject. This book is indispensable for understanding the origins of the seething anger, frustration and hostility that the Nazi's were able to so successfully tap into and manipulate.
Finally, I should note that this book is itself something of an ordeal to read; it took me well over two years to read this 4 pound monster. But I have to say I enjoyed every hour I spent with it...

Amazing piece of work

Amazing piece of work. It is very in depth and you can easily lose yourself if you are not organized and prepared for the amount of information that is going to be thrown at you. Took me a solid month to get through the entire book (became nicknamed the Brick by my friends), but once it was done, I had filled in all the holes and questions I had from previous readings on hyperinflation. Feldman deliberately illustrates that Wiemar Germany and her problems were intrinsically linked to World War I and consistent problems in all spheres. He does so by using data and charts, but also the diary entries of Stinnes, Helfferich, Hirsch, Stresemann, etc. If you are advancing into any graduate program that pertains to Wiemar Germany, this book is a must read!

Essential for economic historians

Astonishing that there is only one other review of this book. This is a must-read book. All English-speaking German historians (at least self-professed) should really examine themselves (as the Chinese would say) and read this book!

This is an unparalleled look at German economic activity between the wars. The only other work I find comparable is Milton & Rose Friedman's epic work:

While extremely difficult to read, the book examines every possible aspect of the German economic machine.

A rare illustration on page 858 has the following caption: "In the old Germany, one read 'the book' around a table; in the new postwar and post-inflation Germany, the profiteer fox-trots, surrounded by books that serve only decorative purposes."

The last sentence from this book: "Surely, the German inflation is one important reason why so many Germans defaulted not only on democracy but also on civilization itself."
