A long wait but worth it

It took a long time to get ahold this book. But it was worth the wait. Unlike most books on organized crime, The Sixth Family concentrates on how criminals work but also why their so powerful.

As an American living in Canada I was surprised and shocked to discover this Canadian mafia family is in the forefront of the international drug trade and has been there for fifty years. I don't think this will make American mob watchers very pleased to find there is a sophisticated mafia family that holds control over the typical American family. But the facts are there.

The authors seem to have spent years gathering information on Vito Rizzuto and members of his family. Unlike some mafia books, the Sixth family isn't about blood and bullets, although there are some murders.

This is not a quick book and requires a little bit of knowledge about the under-world. The writers delve deeply into everything from the French Connection to the Piza Connection and along the way they find the Rizzuto family at work.

I recommend this book as a good read as well as a source of research.

Great Read on the Canadian Mafia. Must for True Crime library

I found this book to be highly enjoyable and informative. It wasn't lacking for information. I admit at times a lot of names were being mentioned and it gets hard to keep them all straight but that is nothing new with reading books regarding the Mafia.

I have read over 50 organized crime books regarding the Mafia/La Cosa Nostra/Camorra, etc. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to understand the workings of the Mafia in Canada. I have read books that dance around the topic such as Mafia Enforcer, Last Days of the Sicilians, Last Godfather, etc but this book really gives you all you want or need to know. This book debunks the myth that the Montreal or Canada mafia was just a faction of the Bonanno Family. It detials the international reach of the Rizzutos and the Sixth Family, who they worked with in other countries, other criminal organizations they partnered with, scope of the drug trade, etc. The book is also relatively current going up to 2004-2005. This book is a must for any true cime library.

Missing the point?

I am a huge PKD fan, and I put this among my favorite of the man's work. It is a difficult work, yes. It took me 3 tries before I could get through the first 70 or so pages. I feel that many of the reviewers here are overlooking a major part of the story. Yes, it's full of endless religious speculation and it is terrifically solipsistic and postmodern, but beyond all that, it is one of the most heart-wrenching books about grief that I have ever read. VALIS is not about YHWH in pink lasers, or the Gnostic gospels (Well, _of course_ it's about both of those things, just bear with me), it is about a man who has lost, and because of that, is lost. He cannot allow himself to understand death and goes on a quest to understand everything but. It's a brilliant novel, not one for everybody, but certainly one for the ages.

Not for the Religiously Timid

Philip K Dick experienced something profound in 1974 after a long battle with drug addiction, depression, and paranoia . . . what that experience was can best be described as a hallucinatory encounter with God. This book may be fiction as it's labeled, but more likely it's as close to autobiography as Dick could remember of his life from 1974 to 1978.

Many people consider this to be an unreadable volume because of its surreal journey through the mind of one with some sort of severe psychosis, and of its wild switches from first to third person, not to mention the confusion with which Dick puts himself in the plot as both the protagonist and narrator, but those being two different people. Add to that a heavy dose of gnostic gospel and widely varied obscure theological elements from many cultures, and you have a book few can even understand in the first reading.

That said, I loved it. Why? Because its actually a journey of awareness through a universe where time doesn't really exist, chaos reigns because the creator is insane, and Philip K Dick has trouble keeping it together yet manages to birth an entire religious awakening at the same time.

Before reading it, please familiarize yourself with Taoism, Buddhism, Gnosticism and even Jungian Psychoanalysis as well as various creation mythologies - perhaps a little light reading in the Joseph Campbell library - then dive in and see what can happen when this is all revealed to one man in a beam of light.

Arcane Religious Philosophy as Schizophrenic Quasi-Biography

This book comes from the later stages of PKD's career, when he probably didn't even care about making his books accessible to the masses. That's something that up-and-comers have to do, and by this point PKD was surely trying to sort out his own personal philosophies in narrative form. You can see the websites for several different PKD fan clubs for speculation on what was going through his mind when he wrote this one. Here we have musings on religious visions, spiritual quests, and arcane ancient Greek and Gnostic Christian philosophies. Obviously one would also suspect experimentation in the arts of mind expansion, though in real life (if such a thing exists) PKD hated to be branded in that way. These are all played out by the typically off-center characters and curveball speculative plotlines of classic PKD.
This book can be quite frustrating at times, with long philosophical passages that are merely a mishmash of ideas PKD had come across in his personal studies, and that lead to philosophy overload but with little direction or grand overall insight to be found. Plus you have to wonder if this book is a literal or merely mental autobiography, or not an autobiography at all but one of PKD's subversive storytelling techniques, designed to warp the reader's mind. This book is told in both first and third person by the same character, a schizophrenic with two personalities that operate simultaneously and even interact with each other (a feature of several PKD stories). Here one of the two selves is the increasingly insane Horselover Fat and the other is his sane alter ego, who happens to be the author PKD himself. Ultimately, the mass philosophical confusion of this novel morphs into sheer fascination, albeit in a pretty cluttered way.
Note that the make-believe movie seen by the characters in this book was expanded by PKD into another novel - *Radio Free Albemuth* - which was not published during his lifetime. A story within a story within a quasi-mental-autobiography, as it were.

Andy Pankhurst studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. A deeply expressive figurative painter, his work is represented in various public, corporate and private collections and museums in the UK and the US. Alongside his work at the Slade, Andy also teaches at the University of Westminster, the Prince's Trust Drawing School and Canterbury Christ Church University. My best table tennis purchase so far

I bought this book when I was out of the game for a few month because of injury, so I really had time to read and think about what I read.

Immediately after my return my rating went up from 1700 USATT to solid mid 18xx and I truly believe it's because of this book. Several people in my club suspected that I wasn't out because of injury but went away to some sort of table tennis school for intensive training - that much of a difference my game was just because of this book.

There is lot's of material and it's hard to remember it all during the game, but I keep rereading it, practicing one or two aspects at a time and every time I spend time rereading the book I play better because I play smarter.

Definitely a better purchase then yet another "tenergy" or new blade you might be tempted to try just because they are new and shiny and the advertisement promises they will raise your game to the next level. New equipment wont, this book definitely will.

It is about table tennis and more

The title says it accurately and more. If you think about it, a lot of concept can be applied to life. It talks about the concept of strategies and tactics. Strategies are what you want to achieve in life and tactics are steps you take to get there. The author gave an example of who a player concentrated on improving he weaker skill but ended up neglecting the other skill he was naturally good at and subsequently suffered more loses. How many people do the same thing in their lives? He also emphasized this game is a life long learning path. There are always new playing styles and tactics out there I never saw. Do I need to show more examples? This book is a must have for every table tennis player.

Best Table Tennis Book... No doubt about it!

As with most, mid to lower level table tennis players, I am always looking for resources. Sure the Internet forums and YouTube have some great content... But for me there are a couple of problems utilizing online content. First, are they someone worth listening to? Hard to know with most forums and YouTube channels. Second, and most important to me...Can they make the information they are putting out understandable?
Sure they can play... But are they good teachers?
I have a copy of this book on my nightstand and after I play someone who totally baffles me with a style or rubber or whatever thing that I have no idea how to deal with... This book tells me what it was... And what to do about it. My copy is bookmarked and highlighted to the extent of nearly requiring a fresh copy. It is simply the best book on table tennis. The title might give some the impression that it's only for high IQ table tennis masterminds... My suggestioned alternative title would be "Table Tennis for People Who are Tired of Getting Beat".
