Hawkwood finds himself behind enemy lines in America during the war of 1812―for fans of Bernard Cornwell, Conn Iggulden and Patrick O'Brien

1812: Matthew Hawkwood, soldier turned spy, is stranded behind enemy lines, in America, a country at war with Britain.

Heading for the safety of the Canadian border, Hawkwood’s route takes him to Albany, where the chance sighting of a former comrade-in-arms―Major Douglas Lawrence―within a consignment of British prisoners stymies to his plans. For as the two men make their escape they uncover an American plot to invade Canada. If it is successful, the entire continent will be lost. The British authorities must be warned.

Pursued by a relentless enemy, Hawkwood and Lawrence set off across the snow-bound Adirondack Mountains; the land the Iroquois call ‘The Hunting Grounds’. But they are not alone.

Buried deep in Hawkwood’s past is an old alliance – one that could save both their lives and help turn the tide of war…

Review
***** Long-listed for the CWA Endeavour Historical Dagger Award 2015 *****

“Matthew Hawkwood’s heartbreaking past meets his hair-raising present in McGee’s splendid fifth Regency thriller. Balancing moments of poignancy with swashbuckling action, historical interest, powerful suspense, and wry wit, McGee delivers all the delights of a classic adventure story.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“The pace is fast and never beyond belief, making for a most exciting story. This entertaining adventure is not just for those who enjoy American historical fiction or war stories. Readers who like their spies with quick wits and fists may want to start here and then return to the start of the series.” (Library Journal)

“McGee blends in historical references to Sir John Johnson, Zebulon Pike, and the Lake Champlain paddle steamer Vermont. There's also insight into the troubled history between the Six Nations and white settlers. Hawkwood's a hero to root for, especially with the addition of an intriguing back story. Captivating action, page upon page, from a Regency-era Bond or Bourne.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Fast paced and filled with atmospheric setting and period details of pioneers, militias, and Huron and Mohawk warriors, this gripping tale rivals Eliot Pattison’s Bone Rattler series and Cooper’s Leatherstocking Tales.” (Booklist)

" hero of five novels -- so far -- and one of the best historical series I've ever read
By Robert A. Erlandson
Forester had his 'Hornblower"; Cornwell has his "Sharpe"; Fleming had his "Bond, James Bond." Put them all together and you get James McGee's "Matthew Hawkwood," hero of five novels -- so far -- and one of the best historical series I've ever read. This review is meant to cover all of them.
"Blooding" is the latest in the series. I recommend reading them in sequence because there are references to Hawkwood's shadowy past in the first four books which are finally explained in "Blooding."
Mr. McGee provides well-researched backgrounds in both Napoleonic Europe and, eventually, in War of 1812 America, for Hawkwood's many adventures.
Mr.McGee also provides the one thing I most look for in any novel I pick up -- a good story well told..

Gripping!
By rpv
If you are interested in historical fiction, this book is great! I was always curious of The War of 1812 and this book interested me hence. Set in 1700s and 1800s the book is as much a story as a history textbook. The writing takes you those scene. Descriptions of cornfields, vegetable patches, milk cows grazing, barns and hen houses to start the book is very nostalgic. It is a gripping story going through several twists and turns. Great for a a casual summer reading!
