With these changes Christian Europe broke radically from its own past and established practices which diverged markedly from those of the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. In this highly original and far-reaching work Jack Goody argues that from the fourth century there developed in the northern Mediterranean a distinctive but not undifferentiated kinship system, whose growth can be attributed to the role of the Church in acquiring property formerly held by domestic groups. He suggests that the early Church, faced with the need to provide for people who had left their kin to devote themselves to the life of the Church, regulated the rules of marriage so that wealth could be channelled away from the family and into the Church. Thus the Church became an 'interitor', acquiring vast tracts of property through the alienation of familial rights. At the same time, the structure of domestic life was changed dramatically, the Church placing more emphasis on individual wishes, on conjugality, and on spiritual rather than natural kinship. Tracing the consequences of this change through to the present day, Jack Goody challenges some fundamental assumptions about the making of western society, and provides an alternative focus for future study of the European family, kinship structures and marriage patterns. The questions he raises will provoke much interest and discussion amongst anthropologists, sociologists and historians.

Jack Goody is Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College. Recently knighted by Her Majesty The Queen for services to anthropology, Professor Goody has researched and taught all over the world, is a Fellow of the British Academy and in 1980 was made a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and he was elected Commandeur des Arts et Lettres in 2006.

A real eye-opener!

Why did Europe in particular develop the prohibitions against marry close kin that are still with us today? Why are a deceased spouse's siblings, the spouses of deceased siblings, various degrees of cousins, and god-children forbidden from being considered eligible marriage partners? The ancient Israelites, Greeks, and Romans had no such prohibitions. The Germanic peoples who settled northern Europe after the Roman Empire fell in the West did not carry these taboos with them. Where did they come from?
This book argues that Fourth Century Christianity invented these marriage prohibitions which had previously not existed in either Biblical or Roman civil law traditions. The effect, if not the actual purpose, of these prohibitions was to limit the number of inheritance strategies available to property owners. By narrowing the options for trans-generational wealth transfers (including the virtual disappearance of civil adoption), the developing Church became the beneficiary of an increasingly large number of heirless people.
The wealth of the Church expanded to such a point that the lay authorities had to legislate against various accumulation strategies used by the Church - culminating ultimately with the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII.
The premise is a fascinating one and does a reasonable job of explaining why we have the marriage prohibitions which are with us today. The first few chapters are a bit of a tough read as they set the anthropological ground work of the study. However, the subsequent chapters are a historians delight. Truly an innovative work.

I'm not going to go into much detail in this, but I have to say as a graduate student, I'm tired of a lot of the crap that Jack Goody gets. He brings an anthropological approach and methodology to a topic that has for far too often been confined to history. He has excellent quantitative arguments, and provides helpful, if sometimes confusing, figures such as pedigrees to illustrate his points throughout the text. Even if you don't buy Goody's arguments, it's a good idea to read this if you're a medievalist (which Goody isn't, by the way). Most historians could do with more exposure to anthropological methodologies. The sheer amount of discussion this text has generated speaks to its importance. Anyone interested in the history of European matrimonial customs must read this as a formative text.

Solid read

In the age of new framework/tool/etc popping up every week in the web world it is easy to be left behind and then wonder what gulp, npm, bower, grunt, etc things are. I mean even I get confused when I hear about yet another tool that was just developed in addition to all the tools that we already have yet to do almost the same thing, yet in a different way that can better fit your technology stack.
So... if you want to pick up on how to use gulp, bower and yeoman, pick up this book and you won't be disappointed by the author way of trying to break things down to provide structure in the way you would consume the information to make it clear what you need, why and when,
By all mean, it is not comprehensive guide on every technology out there and I am glad that the author did not try to cover all and every making it very shallow, instead of concentrating solely on identified technologies instead. At around 200 pages, it is a solid read, to the point. Must have.

A good how-to guide for learning and using Gulp, Bower, and Yeoman more effectively in web development work

I have used Gulp, Bower and Yeoman in several front-end JavaScript projects. Indeed, I have used the tools singularly, in pairs, or all together--and never given them much thought. I have followed their basic installation and use steps without really understanding what each package does. This book (nicely written and well illustrated) delves into the importance of each tool and how it is structured. And the author proves example code for how each tool can be used. The book's goal is to show you how you can set up an efficient automated development workflow for web projects (initialization, development, and deployment). But it also can give you a new appreciation for Gulp, Bower, and Yeoman. Gulp is described as "the build system" and "heart of your toolchain," and Stefan Baumgartner explains that "Gulp's main goal is to define a file-processing pipeline that runs your source files through multiple stages." Bower, meanwhile, is a dependency manager or "package manager." It manages the "self-contained modules that your application uses as a foundation for new software parts or as an extension to existing software." You should have some experience with JavaScript and Node.js to effectively use this book. My four-star review of "Front-End Tooling" is closer to four and a half stars. I think that some of the code examples in the book could have been presented with a bit more clarity (such as where to best position some of the described new lines of code). Nonetheless, this is a worthy book for web developers wanting to know more about working with Gulp, Bower, or Yeoman.

Great Book for Newcomers and Prince2 Foundation Material

Background- I am a Cisco professional with about 4 years experience in administration and engineering.

I was interested in a certification with project management and read this while waiting for my Prince2 manual to come in. I finished half the book and it definitely helped me get into Prince2 topics and familiar with the elements.

When my manual came in, I was overwhelmed by the information it contained. Prince2 For Beginners is great, covers most of the topics you need and will make you confident in learning the stuff. I passed my exam, I would of definitely done better if I read the whole book front to back. Take notes while you read this book and you'll be golden with some practice on the side.

However, her gradual and complete transformation is so convincing that when she finally puts others before herself in order to save another life, it is moving and cathartic. The deepening relationship between Sam and Kent, her childhood friend, is sensitively described and the most complex and compelling relationship in the story. Although somewhat predictable, the plot drives forward and teens will want to see where Sam's choices lead. Haunting, heartbreaking, beautiful

Friday, February 12th should be just another average day for popular, beautiful Samantha Kingston. But it's far from it--her ride home after a late-night party ends in a car accident, only when Sam wakes up, it's Friday, February 12th again. Forced to re-live the last day of her life seven times, Sam struggles to understand the meaning behind these experiences and the significance in her own life and actions. Because only when she can get her last day exactly right will she ever be able to take the next step.

With keen insights and startling candidness, Lauren Oliver's debut novel is a frank, if not at times brutal look at high school social circles and the careless cruelties and bullying that occurs on a daily basis. Sam is one of the mean girls, and she shrugs off her biting words and actions as something that just happens, collateral damage of living through high school. But through every complex and carefully plotted event, Oliver peels back the layers of Sam's life and teaches us all that every little deed has a consequence, and no act goes unnoticed. Though Sam is by no means a likable character at the beginning of the novel, as her character is revealed and she learns a thing or two about the things she has done in her life and the person she has become, she morphs into a true, selfless, and caring heroine, despite her many flaws. The story line is addicting and suspenseful. and as each "day" passes and Sam begins to get things right, the question that has been looming in the back of your mind since the end of the first chapter--What will happen to Sam?--becomes more and more urgent. Oliver is skillful at wielding suspense and heartbreak, making you think hard about the value of your own life and actions.

Before I Fall is a haunting and beautiful book. It will float around at the back of your mind long after you've read it.

I really enjoyed reading "Before I Fall

I really enjoyed reading "Before I Fall." It was thought-provoking, and I truly feel that Lauren Oliver has a skill for communicating the voice of young adults without seeming like she is trying too hard. Many authors come across as fake because they don't have the skill that Ms. Oliver does.
I always know when I've ready a great book because I continue to think about it for days or weeks after. I care for the characters and I grew with them.

This book was alright. I felt it was pretty jumbled and not very clearly written. I did enjoy it but it didn't make me feel any different about life or anything like many of the other books I've read. I felt that all of the characters (except for Kent and Juliet) weren't described good enough and I couldn't picture them. All together this book was okay. Not a book I would read again.

Simplest thing you can do to increase your happiness.

I do the night portion with my wife before bed, and it has improved the communication in our relationship immensely. You know that old piece of wisdom that you should never go to bed angry with your spouse? Sharing the "How could I have made today better?" part with your wife is the easiest way to open up communication.

Game Changer

I have always been one of those people that had good intentions when starting a task, and then got lazy, forgot, etc. I wrote in a gratitude journal for over 4 months and then one day, just decided no more. It was becoming a running tally of my events for the day, not a true reflection of things I was actually grateful. This book has changed all of that for me.

I am writing down real goals for myself, and being grateful for different things every day. Sometimes, they are more broad and all encompassing "being grateful for the love and affection of family and friends", or simply "grateful for coffee in the morning". I have found my confidence being boosted from the daily affirmations, and am making huge strides in changing my attitude towards life's daily frustrations (bad drivers, laundry room hogs, irritating co-workers). Most of the time now, I don't even notice it anymore. Or I can laugh it off, be more patient, or just move onto something else.

The change in my relationships is astounding. Whether they notice or not, I don't know yet. But I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude, love, and affection for everyone in my life. It's an amazing feeling, to know how loved and cherished you are, by so many different people. I only hope that I can keep growing and developing, so these important people always know exactly how truly incredible they are to me.

Can't stick to a journal? Try this one! Bonus: It will make you a more positive person!

I am guilty of having collected dozens of journals and notebooks throughout my life, with the same results every time: excitedly writing in them for a few days (or a few weeks if I'm lucky) and then slowly forgetting about them- mostly due to the amount of time and energy it takes to keep one up.

If you're like me- this is the perfect answer! It truly takes 5 minutes to fill out the section and it is difficult to find an excuse NOT to do it each day.

After giving up for years, I was prompted by the book "The Miracle Morning" by Hal Elrod (a great book!) to take up journaling/scribing and found this wonderful journal.

A few things I love about this journal:
1) The through explanation of the science behind the carefully chosen daily prompts
2) The excellent quotes at the top of each day- they are carefully selected and truly motivational
3) The way it is clearly divided into a morning and an evening section
4) The beautiful cover- it feels like linen/cloth and it looks high quality and expensive

The best thing about this journal is that if you follow it the way it is intended- filling it out upon waking and before going to bed everyday- it will re-center you and provide balance and positivity to your life.

Note: I like ending on a more positive note than focusing on what I didn't do well enough (even though that last question is phrased as positivity as possible), so I am considering adding my own question at the very bottom that says "What am I looking forward to tomorrow?"

BOTTOM LINE: I genuinely look forward to writing in this journal twice a day. This is a journal I really see myself completing for the entire year, for the first time in my life. This is great for people like me who have difficulties sticking to something, who would like a stepping stone to a more traditional journal, or who just want to focus on the positives in life and are looking for a tool to assist in becoming an all-around more emotionally balanced individual.
