Comprehensive Guide for Developers and Analysts

SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0 The Complete Reference is just that: a complete overview and guide to the latest version of the Business Objects suite of analytical applications. The authors have done an admirable job of updating the material from the previous versions of the book; preserving content that is still applicable to the new version as well as expanding and enhancing material to bring it up to date. I am particularly fond of the order of presentation, which takes the reader from a "birds eye view" of BI strategy and deployment, to the development of the universe (semantic layer), to the use of analytical tools by power users and business analysts/executives. New material is included on BO Explorer and Dashboards, and it is targeted at the non-technical user who will get the most from these applications. The bulk of the book is devoted to the Information Design Tool, which is BO 4.0's expanded version of Universe Designer, incorporating elements of Data Federator to allow for the development of multiple data foundations and business layers utilizing more than one data source. Seasoned universe designers will find this material invaluable when upgrading to the new platform as the Designer tool has been supplanted by a much more robust and feature-rich application.
The material on Web Intelligence will also prove helpful as numerous new features have been added to bring the product closer to a full-client analytical tool. It should be noted that the book does not cover BO Data Services, nor does it provide in-depth material on deployment (Windows, UNIX, etc.), server architecture or performance tuning, but this is largely due to the intended target audience. If you are a BO universe designer, or a business analyst relying on BO 4.0 to provide business intelligence, this will certainly become a well-thumbed reference in your library.

Must-have resource for the new Information Design Tool

I started using BusinessObjects in February 2003. As a newbie, I was so grateful that Business Objects: The Complete Reference was published later that year. According to Amazon.com, I purchased the Business Objects: The Complete Reference (Osborne Complete Reference Series) on August 21, 2003. I always kept the copy handy until I replaced it with BusinessObjects XI (Release 2): The Complete Reference. McGraw Hill did not publish an edition for XI 3.0/XI 3.1, but Cindi Howson and co-author Elizabeth Newbould have returned with SAP SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0 The Complete Reference 3/E.
SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0: The Complete Reference is a book that almost did not get published. The SAP BusinessObjects product portfolio is substantially larger than the one that was covered in the first edition nearly 10 years ago, which creates challenges for any author. From the book's introduction, "The Complete Reference brand does not imply the complete SAP BusinessObjects product line, but rather, a complete reference for certain modules... We have tried to focus the content of the book primarily on what business application designers, business analysts, and power users need to know. Software engineers and system administrators were not the intended audience for this book". The 752-page book is organized into four parts: Getting Ready for Business Intelligence (3 chapters), Universes and the Information Design Tool (twelve chapters), Reporting and Analysis (seven chapters), and Dashboards and More (six chapters).
While the book is excellent from start to finish, what really sets it apart are twelve chapters devoted to the Information Design Tool, the semantic layer design tool that replaces the classic Designer tool (now known on the BI 4.0 platform as the Universe Design Tool). SAP BusinessObjects BI 4.0: The Complete Reference is the best published resource for universe design with the Information Design Tool. My favorite chapter is chapter 13, Design Principles: Where to Put the Intelligence, which helps the reader understand the tradeoffs between placing intelligence in the database, the universe, or the report. The book also covers lifecycle management (known on the BI 4.0 platform as Promotion Management and Version Management), how multiple designers can use the project synchronization features of the Information Design Tool, and maintaining and monitoring the universe once it has gone into production.
I've been well served by having Cindi Howson's books on my shelf for the past decade. If you use the Information Design Tool, Web Intelligence or Dashboards on a regular basis, you'll appreciate having this book on your shelf. It's available in both paperback and Kindle formats.

Includes up-to-date BI4 Feature Pack 3 Features

If you want to learn how the new Information Design Tool works, or understand best practices for the universe, this book is for you. Learn more step-by-step Web Intelligence, including subqueries and nested queries. Even if you are an experienced XI 3.1 Universe Designer, there are significant changes in the BI4 Information Design Tool, especially multi-source universes, that this book is for you. There are also 4 chapters on Dashboards.
I like how she covers universe documentation, integrity and quality assurance. There is also a chart on all of the releases of Web Intelligence, including DeskI. This book includes information I haven't seen covered any where else.
