The book every alternative healer should read

Various state and federal licensing laws exist to protect the public from unregulated dispensing of drugs, careless administration of powerful radiation, and overzealous surgery.
However, there also exists a wide gamut of extremely positive benign healing modalities that have so rarely offended the public that lawmakers have never seen reason to regulate them beyond the ordinary rules of commerce. In reality, some states have taken the proactive position that various alternative practitioners should be allowed to go about their healing without undue interference.
Even so, the medical societies are vigorous in their efforts to have the public believe that *all* healing falls under their domain and they are quick to instill fear in alternative healers with threats that they will be charged with "unlicensed practice of medicine," a very serious offense. This unionized restraint of trade is generally overlooked by uninformed law officers and judges who fail to understand the original intent of the laws meant to regulate the mentioned drugs, radiation, and surgery.
A key part of unlicensed practice is that all good rules of business, including record keeping, cooperation with authorities, money-back guarantees, client confidentiality, and proposed treatment disclosure to clients, should be followed to the letter. No part of alternative healing has room for con-men, scam artists, or the like. Dr. Wilson's book addresses all these concerns and helps the bewildered ethical alternative healer set a course that will keep him or her far from the rocky shoals of "practicing medicine without a license."
Even those such as chiropractors, who successfully fought in the courts for their rights to practice, will find much of value in Dr. Wilson's book.

Big help in a small book

I purchased "Legal Guidelines for Unlicensed Practitioners" at the same time as another book dealing with a similar topic entitled, "How to Open or Improve a Successful Alternative Healthcare Practice" (in which I also reviewed). The book in this review deals strictly with the legal aspect of being an unlicensed practitioner in the United States, and was very informative in this regard. Some chapter titles include, "Our Laws and Their Purposes", "Legal Concepts About Health and Healing", "Differences Between Licensing and Certification", "The Case Against Medical Licensing", "If Legal Disputes Arise", and more...Interestingly, the author has a medical degree, but because of a health issue, was not able to finish his internship and earn his license. As a result he has worked for many years as an unlicensed nutrition consultant. His purpose in writing the book was to spare other unlicensed practitioners some of the confusion that he had experienced throughout his career. This book is not long (only 131 pages), but is full of information regarding this subject matter. Purchased with the other, above mentioned book on Alternative Healthcare Practice, I feel like I have covered all of my questions. This book does not offer the same information as the above mentioned book regarding the intricacies of thinking through details of starting a practice ( business cards, websites, location, etc), but is dealing strictly with the legal aspects which is, of course, of vital importance.

Good lesson on the Constitution, but not much practical advice

I was really hoping for some useful information about which words I can use in advertising in order to avoid being prosecuted for practicing medicine without a license. I work in the holistic health care field, and I am not a licensed M.D., but I have not yet found a clear list of words I am allowed to use. I know I am not allowed to prescribe or diagnose or say I can "cure" a disease. In fact, I think the word "disease" may be one of the words I am not allowed to use. The only word I do know I can use is "heal."
This book is mainly focused on constitutional law and how to avoid prosecution, which is interesting, but not very useful in my situation. I want to avoid even attracting the kind of attention that could lead to prosecution!
